Only 35% Of Millennials Are Interested In Buying A Self Driving Vehicle
You might not be able to buy an affordable (let’s say $30,000) self-driving car any time in the next 25 years, but, hell, there’s no reason we can’t ask the people about it. Edmunds released a survey Monday where they asked people from across all driving age groups if they would buy a self-driving car in the next five years.

Millennial, were the most willing to consider buying cars that drive themselves, with 35 percent saying they would do so in the next five years if, by magic, they somehow became available in that time.

What I find most interesting is how the media has sold a stereotype of millennials that demographic research is proving wrong.

I thought it would be higher since millennials are not interested in driving and would rather someone/thing else do it. Enter the Autonomous car.

I thought millennials are more likely to buy the next $1,000 smartphone than a car, and didn't have the finances to buy a car... and besides, they live at home and drive their parents' car, so why incur the expense of owning your own? At least that's what Millennial Lore tells us.

Actually - I would expect that it would be OLDER drivers that would want self driving cars - when they reach a time when they no longer can - or when things like eye-sight starts to diminish.

I would also expect that a person who CAN drive a car - especially millennials - would object having to pay for the technology in a car that they do not need.

This - however - remains a moot point - since Self Driving cars are WAY off into the future- and it will require a lot of discussion with INSURANCE companies on how to insure them and how liability with manufacturers will be limited.

TomM: A big "amen" to your post. I love driving. I love road trips. I don't want a self-driving car, so I won't get one, for as long as I can, and for as long as I feel this way.

As for a self-driving option: I agree with you that maybe, someday, I might get that... providing it's exceptionally reliable (way better than a human driver) AND relatively inexpensive. We're not there today. Not by a long shot.

That's just the BS the media has been telling you. Millennials are buying a lot of cars.

The question is not appropriately worded. Replace buy with use and I think the number would be dramatically different. Many millenials do not want to deal with the hassle of car ownership, especially if you live in an urban area where you need to pay hundreds of dollars each month for parking, waste time hunting for parking, deal with constant dings on your car, parking tickets, etc. Any millennial that user UBER/Lyft will one day be using a self-driving car, although they probably won't be buying one.

Many of my millennial coworkers do not own a car even though the office is in a suburbanish area. They take public transit, bike, carshare, or carpool.

It's a pointless survey, with disruptive tech many consumers don't know what they want until it hits them in the face. This was the case with computers, the internet, cell phones, smart phones, etc. One day we all will be using self-driving cars, it is inevitable at this point.

Probably because only 35% of them can afford one. They should have found out who many would rather walk or ride a skateboard than be in a car at all.

There might be hope yet....
