UAW Claims Tesla Fired Workers For Wanting To Unionize
The United Auto Workers union on Wednesday filed an unfair labor practice claim against Tesla, claiming the company harassed, intimidated, and fired workers who openly advocated for unionizing its California factory.

The claim was filed with the National Labor Relations Board, an independent government agency that seeks to enforce U.S. labor laws. This month, Tesla fired several hundred employees, citing “performance” issues.

Re: Union claims pro-union employees fired

Yeah. And some fired Black workers claimed the firings were racist. There might be a grain of truth in that, but that's not the whole story.

With the information we know at this time, it *appears* that the mass Tesla firings were part of cost-cutting measures to stay afloat longer. Look out for the next issuing of Tesla stock, or bonds, or some other capital-raising "vehicle".

On a related note, one of Musk's other companies, SolarCity, recently and suddenly fired or laid off an estimated 1,200 workers from their 33,000 strong workforce (~3.6%). While SolarCity, like Tesla Motors, claims this was done for performance reasons, numerous interviewed ex-employees said they were blindsided by the move, and it was not performance related.

For people who are not owners or operators of larges business, it's exceptionally rare and highly irregular for an enterprise to schedule a massive workforce reduction on the basis of performance, and do it all at the same time. The natural way performance-related reductions unfold is that individuals who have performed poorly are released on an ongoing basis, a few at a time, some here, some there.

On the other hand, the Ivory Tower might issue an order to middle managers, such as, "You must cut headcount by 3.6% and you have 30 days to do it." Put under the gun, these managers will likely do their best to retain their favored employees, and select the ones they didn't know well or didn't like for headcount reduction (this might include some racial prejudice and/or anti-union beliefs). The company then spins this workforce reduction as firings for "performance reasons." Some affected individuals who were pro-union then speculate they were fired for being pro-union. Ditto with fired Black employees. In truth, that played a smaller role. The biggest factor was the executives' orders to cut headcount.

Wouldn't it make more sense to assume they are anti-union?
