I've said this for some time. Mazda does not have the resources to remain a stand-alone brand. They will be absorbed.

As Toyota has a 5% stake in Mazda the new RX could have been brought to market on the Z5/Supra platform. Spread the costs our further. Put a rotary engine in it and add some Mazda styling over the hard points and there it is. Not really a Mazda but the cheapest way to bring it to market and eek out a profit on a low volume car.

The ONLY way a selection of RWD coupes has a chance of being reality is through platform sharing. If GM and Ford were smart, they'd ink a deal for a shared RWD platform.
