Surprised? Toyota-Mazda Joint Assembly Plant To Be Located In The Deep South

Alabama and North Carolina are the final states in the running to win a prized Toyota Motor Corp. and Mazda Motor Corp. joint car factory worth $1.6 billion, people familiar with the negotiations told Bloomberg.

Several states were in the running for the massive plant. Tennessee, Texas and South Carolina were recently still in consideration, the people told Bloomberg. Illinois was eliminated from the running last month. Mississippi was also seen as an early contender for the plant.

A final choice is expected to be announced early next year.

What is bothersome is the $1 Billion USD in incentives they are seeking from the winning "bidder" state for the opportunity to host their new plant. States that are best positioned to take advantage of their supplier network are the ones most likely to be chosen. There are many auto plants in this part of the USA. Regional and Local governments should be banned from giving away future tax dollars to secure plants or HQ's. Build it or not for logical reasons, not financial blackmail.

While I would personally object to a state offering such high incentives to a factory that will likely not produce enough taxes to offset that amount - the fact is - The companies involved are in it for the money - and whatever deal makes OVERALL the best offer will win. THAT is business.

Makes sense. Does not require highly skilled labor to bolt a car together, wages are lowest in the country, keep it up and we can compete with China and India one on one. MAGA baby!
