Volvo Wins 3 Year Deal To Supply Uber With Robo Taxis

Volvo has signed a framework agreement with Uber on a three-year deal to sell it up to 24,000 cars that will become part of the ride-sharing giant's first robotaxi fleet.

Volvo said it will supply XC90s with the core autonomous driving technologies that Uber needs to add its own self-driving features.

“The automotive industry is being disrupted by technology and Volvo chooses to be an active part of that disruption,” Volvo CEO Hakan Samuelsson said in a statement. “Our aim is to be the supplier of choice for AD [autonomous driving] ride-sharing service providers globally. Today's agreement with Uber is a primary example of that strategic direction.”

This doesn't make sense. I like Volvos but they are notoriously expensive to fix and maintain -not exactly taxi material especially with the mass mileage that was mastered by Crown Vics that are still on the road today with 1M+ miles and counting. Run on sentence award goes to me!

UBER is Chinese?

This is definitely the automotive model for the future, the only question is when. However, UBER is going to have a huge disadvantage against auto manufacturers building their own cars that create their own ride-sharing services. It is much easier to convince people to try a new app than for UBER to build their own cars.

The Chinese are not buying the future here.
They are selling cars.
24000 of them.
