Toyota's worldwide production rises in September
Toyota Motor Corp.'s global production rose 3.8 percent in September, putting the company on track to overtake General Motors as the world's biggest automaker. It was the company's 23rd consecutive monthly advance.

Surging oil prices have prompted drivers to favor fuel-efficient cars, including the Prius hybrid, Corolla compact and the midsize Camry, the best-selling model on the U.S. market for eight of the last nine years.

Toyota's total output last month came to 696,594 vehicles, the company reported Tuesday. Overseas production climbed 2.8 percent to 340,945 units, while domestic output rose 4.7 percent to 355,649 vehicles.

Earlier this month, the first hybrid version of the Toyota Camry made outside Japan rolled off the assembly line of its Kentucky plant, positioning the Japanese automaker to take an even larger share of the gasoline-electric vehicle market in the United States.

You have to remember that Toyota is going to be where GM was many decades ago. At which point Toyota was where Hyundai is today. Look where GM is now, where Toyota is getting to and where Hyundai came from.

hyundai steals far more sales from the domestics (and maybe SECOND tier japanese brands) than from toyota and honda.

just look at sales figures. everytime hyundai exhibits greater market penetration, SO DOES TOYOTA. meanwhile the domestics continue to lose market share.

most hyundai gains are at the expense of detroit.

Toyota customers don't care much for styling.

The typical Toyota customer is not an enthusiast but a value-oriented person who just wants "a car" to bring him from A to B. They want a car with minimal problems and a Toyota excels at that.

Most of the worlds car buyers think like this.

i used to think toyota fans did not care about styling; however, my father-in-law, an avid toyota fan (has a camry and solara) actually sold his camry for...drum roll...an aura xr. why he is getting rid of the camry you ask?....the new camry is just too ugly.

I don't recall saying anything negative in my first comment in this thread.

Either the Toyota fans on this site take everything too personal or there are just too many fanboys here.

Kart1, look at my first comment. Do you see a Toyota hater here? Toyota has never really made exciting mainstream cars from a styling POV. There is ample evidence that points to your typical global Toyota buyer being a guy who doesn't care about anything else much except value and reliability.

Thx Will. I was talking about the things that happened earlier in regards to Hyundai beating Toyota in 3 years, etc, etc etc. Especially the one with the list of 100 companies. That was hilarious, Hyundai was at like 75 and Toyota was at 8. :<).

the anti-toyota crowd is simply JEALOUS of the success of the world's MOST reliable and dependable vehicles.

in the latest CR buying guide, in the recommended used cars list, there are four columns. toyota models take up ONE WHOLE column. next best makes only take 1/2 a column. certain makes are CONSPICUOUS by their ABSENCE.

not surprising, when you consider even EIGHT YEAR old toyotas (and hondas) are still more dependable and reliable than many competitors' (even with "prestige" labels) 3 and 4 year old heaps.

buying new, it's a no-brainer where to go if you expect to keep your car beyond the warranty period.

it's REALLY disgraceful when a COROLLA is rated higher than even the S-class! (in reliability) not just higher, but MUCH higher.

the only excuses you ever hear from the euro fanboys, is, "well, all the problems are taken care of by the warranty. and people who can afford these cars ALWAYS get a new one before the warranty expires."

well, their time must not be very valuable. over the past 35 years, the ONLY times i EVER had to leave my car for warranty work which could not be taken care during a routine service, was with a 2000 ford. with 2 toyotas and 1 nissan bought new, i practically NEVER returned to the dealer. same with 2 USED toyotas.

so for all the critics who would claim lexuses are just rebadged toyotas:

Well, TOYOTAS are STILL BETTER than whatever you badge whores drive.
