Is It Just About Acceleration? Tesla Model S P100D Vs Audi R8 V10

If the internet one day becomes full and there’s no space left for anything new, all we have to do is delete every video of an electric car outrunning a petrol-engined car on a drag strip. More often than not, the electric car in question is a Tesla, most likely the twin-motor Model S P100D. If you looked no further than these videos, you’d have to conclude that the P100D is the quickest motor vehicle ever to be sold to the public.

But let’s look a little further. Are electric cars really as fast as the clips suggest? What’s more, in a contest like this, can an EV ever be as thrilling and dramatic as a conventional performance car?

I hate to say this - but I remember back in the 70's when the Rabbit/Golf broke the 10 second 0-60 barrier - and was considered a fast car. Today - even Mini-Vans beat that time.

However - it is not how fast a car "can"go - it is how fast you drive it - and most people never come close to their cars actual time.

That is not correct, it can do 2.5-2.9s runs a hundred times. Going into Ludicrous+ mode adds 0.1s and you need to wait 30min, not worth it and only useful for bragging rights. Tesla doesn't even mention it on their website any more, it's an easter egg. The Roadster did 1.9s launches hundreds of times over 3+ hours with no difficulties and no special mode required. That is the real competitor to the R8.

Dude, do you realize you get unhinged at the mere *thought* of someone disagreeing with you? Yours was only the second post in the thread, and you went non-linear. You’re unwittingly broadcasting your neediness for others to see you as “right” and “smart,” even before someone responds to you.

Personally, I wonder how you came to such a pained, angry, seething, hateful state. Even for an Alt.Right-er, your behavior is extreme. I sincerely hope you find a way to feel better, and learn how to let go of your anger and hate.

Well Bob, for your own benefit I should let you know that comments like that make you sound like an uncultured hick. (And I'm closest to Libertarian)

First, the warning was only for the "slower" P90D which was the first car to get Ludicrous. The P100D never got that warning about using Ludicrous too many times.

Second. There are 3 modes on the P100D: Sport, Ludicrous, and Ludicrous+. Let's be honest, nobody uses the Sport setting. Ludicrous is a standard mode that gives you a 2.5 0-60 and you can hit that all day long. Ludicrous+ is an easter egg setting that requires 30min and makes you jump through hoops. It is also the one with the "run home to mommy" message which still exists today. You get a 0-60 in 2.4 seconds (some say 2.35)... but you can only do that a few times and it is super cumbersome to do. If you are drag racing great, but I think it is mostly pointless. The real point is, a standard P100D can do 2.5s launches over and over--not a few times but dozens and dozens. The Roadster will take it a step further, it must have done 300+ launches at 1.9s during the reveal event.

I have the slowest Model S (5.9s) and even at 20% battery I can still floor it and get max power. EVs are more resilient than you think. The main weakness is nonstop max performance on a track, and I think Tesla has solved that problem with their collaboration with a new Electric racing org (the prob was not the battery but the motors generating too much heat).

I just noticed BobM's post (the one I was referring to) disappeared. Was his account "bounced"?

Looks like it.

If you measure "performance" only in a 0 to 60 MPH time, then you'll be mightily impressed with Tesla's performance.

If you're thinking about handling on a track, or in the twisties, or all-day aggressive driving, then the Tesla might disappoint you.

^^^
Also, keep in mind that the Tesla sedans and SUVs were not designed to be track vehicles, or to excel in the twisties, or to be used aggressively all day, like the Audi R8 was.

Not to mention Tesla's, and all other EVs lack any soul. No cam noise, engine/intake noise, exhause noise. I love my E30 for that.. slow and RAW! EV's are boring!!!!!!!!

I'm very temporarily driving a 3-series BMW which supposedly has lots of soul, but honestly it feels clunky af compared to the S. I would take the S any day of the week. (Car needed a window replaced and they ran out of Tesla loaners).

7msynthetic: As much as an EV is not for me, numerous ICE and Hybrid vehicles (I'm looking at you, BMW) already include synthesized engine noise to give the driver the sensation of driving a more "capable" car, or something they've been entrained to associate with performance, like a big block V8 sound.

I'm sure EV manufacturers can easily add that to the driver experience, including simulated gear shifts and other "feels like Good Ol' ICE" treatments. Voila! Instant "soul."

Just this last week I thought about the simulated shifts when driving the beemer. That is entirely possible to do, but would just slow the car down and jerk it unnecessarily =). I don't think Tesla will ever add that for the same reason they do not want anything that looks like a gas tank (all the flaps for charging are hidden). The sound might be neat and should be easy to do. The sounds was my favorite part about the BMW even though it felt so much slower.
