BMW's Base Version Of The M5 Tops $100K - When Is It Simply Not Worth It?
BMW chose to release the M5 using a slow cascade of bite-sized bits of information, which serve to continuously renew its name in the headlines and leave us wondering what else is left to learn. We know just about everything there is to know about the big bad Bavarian bruiser—the powertrain that’s responsible for pumping out 600 horsepower, the sophisticated all-wheel drive system that brings the model up to the level of its arch-AMG rival—but we don’t know what’s most important.

Of course the M5 will be a brilliant car, but 100K as the starting price is at least $25K too high in an imploding sedan market.

The M5 has been over $100k in Canada for likely a decade or more. Welcome to the club.

When it looks like this....its not worth it. A car with this performance should create a sense of occasion, a special feeling when you look at it, sit in it and drive it. It simply is not the kind of car you walk away from and have to look back at to capture one more look. It doesn't have to shout but it shouldn't need an explanation to your spouse, friend, mother or in-law..."You paid how much for this?", "It looks just like my 5 series, right?", "Is it really worth that much?", " Again, why did you buy it?"

I seem to have a mental hangup when my car price breaks 6 figures. I'm out on this one, there's no place to drive this car here in SW Florida that isn't a track and it's too valuable a car to crash on the track. I find myself leaning towards cars that have a seat of the pants perception of speed rather than cars that can top 200mph. Much more fun to drive and cheaper to boot. I have an X5M right now and I really question my choice when a regular X5 would have been just as capable given traffic/laws/octogenarians ...

I'd rather have a Hemi Charger and loads of fun because it's just a Dodge.

"BMW's Base Version Of The M5 Tops $100K - When Is It Simply Not Worth It?"

When people stop buy it.

It's not like it a great leap in price the previous M5 start at $94,100 and the new one is significantly faster and has AWD. The MB E63 starts at $104,400, the Audi RS7 is $113,900, and even the Cadillac CTS-V base price is $85,995 which is universally consider a bargain. None of the sedan are cheap. Pricing is at the low end of it's European competition, I think BMW will sell as many as they want.

The M sedans are already soft sellers is the problem. M + crossover is gold. I absolutely agree that if it can meet its sales goals then do it. I think this will languish though. If I were spending north of $100K for a sedan, I'd rather have a low-end S Class.

The E63S starts at $104K and the current RS7 starts at $113k. A Panamera Turbo starts at $150k. The M5 might seem like a bargain at the end of the day.

10 years ago the Euro was value was $1.60 to one U.S. dollar. Today, the Euro is valued at about $1.155.
So the dollar's strength has greatly increased yet German cars have zoomed upwards in price. It appears the Germans are engaging in deceitful, unfair pricing behavior.

scenicbyway12: I agree with you, The MB E63 starts at $104,400 but it is a Mercedes...the other is Just a BMW with an outdated design. Also with the MB you can kick the but of any Panamera Turbo which can reach more than 200,000 with all the options added. Hopefully, the new M5 will have the performance to justify that price tag because the design is a fail. If at least it is as good as the Panamera...It will be ok.

The price is in line with the Mercedes-AMG E63S, which starts at $104,400 and the RS7, which starts at $113,700. However, given how bland the M5 looks, how small its sales are and how BMW has lost its dynamic prowess, the M5 will not be enough to reverse BMW's second consecutive year of U.S. sales declines.

The new M5 looks almost indistinguishable from the standard base 5 series sedan and painfully similar on the road like a 4 door 3 series.

On top of that it is indistinguishable from the pervious 5 Series that was old, dull, and played out.

The design looks so boring for a car with supercar numbers.

The same can be asked of the E63?
