Alfa Romeo Poised To Return To Formula 1 - Will That Give Them Better Street Cred?
Sauber is poised to reveal its 2018 line-up at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, as rumours swirl it could bring the Alfa Romeo name back to Formula 1 with Ferrari.

With Sauber keen to forge closer ties with Ferrari, it has been clear for some time that one of its 2018 race seats would go to Formula 2 champion and Ferrari protege Charles Leclerc.

The decision on the second Sauber drive has been much tougher to nail down, with Ferrari weighing up whether to place Antonio Giovinazzi there as well.

Ok so the Giulia is total garbage. The Stelvio is unremarkable. Meanwhile Dodge, Chrysler, and Maserati are being starved for new product. By all means, let's waste what little money FCA has on a pointless F1 effort.

@MD- It is just a branding exercise. Nothing more. There will not be an F1 engine built by Alfa. Just a label on the F1 car. Mould for the cylinder head will be changed to say Alfa Romeo vs Ferrari.

The waste of money is Auburn Hills. If it wasn’t for all the bailouts via US taxpayers, it would look like the Packard plant in Detroit. Sell off Jeep, show some mercy and put 2 in the back of head of Chrysler and Dodge kill them off. Then get Maserand and Alfa the hell out of Auburn Hills and away the mindset that bankrupted the company numerous times. That mindset is what caused the Germans to gladly sell the company for 30 billion less than they paid for it.

10s of millions of dollars will be spent on literally NOTHING in this "simple branding exercise" and changing the "mold" of the cylinder head (cover I assume).

I'll believe it when I see it! FCA is bleeding cash, delaying introduction of every model in its lineup of brands and its going to enter the highest cost racing series...I doubt it. This smells like Sergio blowing smoke up his arse again to get publicity and draw attention in the hope of luring a buyer for his struggling company.

Of course the more worrying prospect of all this is that due to any F1 success they will feel they need a super sporting model to "channel" that energy into sales floor success. The 8C was not a great car. Going back to that well would be a large waste of money.
