SPIED on the STREET: We Time Warp Back To 1995 To See The Mitsubishi 3000GT Spyder VR4 — You Won't Believe How MUCH It Originally Cost
As it was a long weekend with "good enough" weather in the New York Tri-State region without salt on the roads, that meant one thing. Game on!

In other words, the local Cars and Coffee chapter decided to host an impromptu get together first thing Sunday morning. And, a bit to my surprise, there was actually a pretty solid turnout despite mid 40s temperatures and a steady wind that cut through layers of clothing.

While there were plenty of crazy exotics to go around, like the pair of Huracan Performantes, F12 TdF, McLarens, etc., there's always plenty of odd or rare birds that turn up. Although those vehicles are very cool to see in the flesh, I always have an appreciation for the stuff I didn't expect.

Like the big-ass Dodge Power Wagon, or what I've included pictures of below: A Mitsubishi 3000GT Spyder VR4.

I'll be the first to admit I don't know a lot about this car. What I do know is I've only seen one or two in my lifetime and the convertible variants are quite rare to come by. Oh, and it's been credited with driving Mercedes-Benz to utilize a power folding hardtop in its first-gen SLK Roadster.

What I learned today is that the '95 Spyder VR4 cost some serious dollars. About $65,000, to be exact. Remember, this is 1995! Is anyone blown away by this like I am?

Just another stupidly overpriced Japanese sports car that was not taken seriously.

They actually commissioned a shop known for sunroof/conv top conversions(ASC) to design the top. The price of these were and still are astronomical. Back then, that was nsx, 911 and Mercedes SL money! Definitely an oddball.

Then you factor in that it was developed with an Eclipse as the base platform and the price is even more ridiculous. BUT in that era, Mitsubishi at least had signs of life apparently.

Ahh the good old days of DSM. One cannot forget the Dodge Stealth. Or the fantastic stratus coupe. Or the dodge avenger, plymouth laser, eagle and the illustrious sebring!
