#LAAUTOSHOW: The Concept Car That MAY Steal The Show Comes From An Unexpected Place...
In recent years there's been a big shake up when it comes to automotive design. Usually, the most moving and interesting designs came from Europe and were observed at the Geneva and Paris Motor Shows.

Today though, things have shifted. That's because automakers from all over are starting to bring their "A" game.

Two big names that have made incredible strides are Kia and Mazda. And while both have shown some truly staggering concepts, they're both shipping great designs to production. We applaud them because both of these automakers are keeping things interesting.

The latest example from Mazda is the all-new Mazda Vision Coupe, which actually debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show. And, boy, it really speaks volumes.

Just check out its side profile and hind quarters. Have you seen a rear end that gorgeous and sensual outside the likes of Aston Martin or Ferrari? I can't think of one.

Being a "vision" car we doubt it will see the light of day; however, do keep in mind that some of the cues you see in this concept may trickle down into production vehicles you'll find in showrooms everywhere.

Mazda's press release follows:

Mazda Unveils KAI CONCEPT and VISION COUPE at Tokyo Motor Show

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation unveiled two concept models, the Mazda KAI CONCEPT and the Mazda VISION COUPE at the 45th Tokyo Motor Show today. Organized by the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association, the show will be open to the public from Oct. 28 through Nov. 5. Mazda has scheduled a press conference for 1:40 p.m. today.
The Mazda KAI CONCEPT compact hatchback heralds a new generation of Mazda cars. Featuring the next-generation SKYACTIV-X gasoline engine, SKYACTIV-Vehicle Architecture and a more mature expression of the KODO design language, the model embodies the technology, engineering and design concepts that will define the next generation of Mazda cars. Refinements in all areas of dynamic performance have produced a dramatically quieter, more comfortable ride and an enhanced performance feel. The KAI CONCEPT features muscular, solid proportions and its form is brought to life by a delicate flow of reflections over the body sides.

The VISION COUPE represents Mazda’s design vision for next-generation models; a more mature expression of KODO applies a Japanese aesthetic to achieve more elegant and premium styling. The exterior features a “one motion” form that exudes a sense of speed and the interior combines three-dimensional depth with a strong longitudinal axis to create a relaxed space that maintains a sense of speed.

In line with its “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom 2030” long-term vision for technology development, Mazda aims to use the fundamental appeal of the automobile — driving pleasure — to inspire people, enrich society and help bring about a beautiful earth. By offering an experience of car ownership that celebrates driving, the company hopes to enrich lives and build a strong bond with customers.

Gorgeous but pointless if it isn't built as is. If they throw this onto an FWD platform it will be ruined.

Well- Mazda does not have a suitable rear wheel drive platform. ANd it cannot be as is - no Outside RearView Mirrors that would meet code in most states alone.

But - yes - it is a looker!

Now that Mazda is being slowly consumed by Toyota, Mazda has the Lexus IS/GS platform for the asking.

It is a 4-door Ferrari F612 Scaglietti with the nose cut off. Beautiful. But the last thing Mazda needs is an S-Class alternative.

While I agree that the rear end really is elegant and attractive, this really isn't doing much for me. The proportions are cartoonish like the Maybach coupe and cabriolet concepts.

Somebody needs to be fired at Mazda. An enormous hood? This is not where car design is going.

Mazda: Go read up on batteries and come back next year.

"The proportions are cartoonish"

Indeed. I think Dick Tracy had one of these in yellow.
