#LAAUTOSHOW: SPY vs. SPY — 001 & 00R Duke It Out Over The BMW X7 Concept IN THE FLESH, What Say YOU?
As every auto show comes and go, Agent 001 and I are in pretty constant communication. Of course we talk about the all-new debuts, what we like and what we don't dig.

And then we revisit vehicles that we've seen for a bit of time. That's because opinions change.

2017 Los Angeles Auto Show

For me when I see the BMW X7 Concept, a bit of vomit makes its presence known. While I do believe there's a business case for a third-row BMW sport-utility vehicle, I can't get over this vehicle's front grille. It's atrocious. Couldn't the blue and white have styled its front grille a bit differently? It's a bit too strong and cartoonish.

When I talk to 001, however, he is a fan — somehow. While he is quick to admit that it's not as stirring or innovative as a Tesla Model S or first-gen Audi R8, it is far more attractive than the likes of its direct competition in form of the Mercedes-Benz GLS and Tesla Model X. According to him, his experience has been like that of the ugly but cute dog at the pet store — you fall in love with it over time. Overall, 001 says it has more freshness and panache over the current-gen 7-Series. He does note one thing though: BMW's biggest mistake was the color they showed it in. 001 says that if it had been in flaky, metallic black or silver it would have garnered widespread praise.

We do know this thing is going to have a helluva run in the sales department. Just ask yourself this: Who is making an awesome, three-row SUV that you really want to own?

Having said that, we're curious about what YOU think of the X7 Concept's styling. Are you digging its look or would you rather it be put out of its misery?

It says Concept X7 on the truck. You might be jumping the gun Agents.

Touché.

I perhaps got a bit excited. It is indeed a concept but BMW's typically move from concept to production without HUGE changes to exterior styling. Typical things modified due to production costs and what not but largely the same.

Edited for clarity.

@Agent00R -I Agree. But in this case I think the roof, smaller rear view mirrors, the steering wheel and the whole front of the concept will not make it to production. Time will tell. I am prepared to stand corrected if I am wrong.

It will likely have full glass roof but to keep structural rigidity it seems BMW is making clear it will do something like the three-pointed star.

Steering wheel and exterior side view mirrors are pretty much always changed in production form, so no surprise there.

I think you're going to be surprised with the front end as the latest spy shots indicate those nostrils are here to stay, baby! Hoping I am wrong though...

Did anyone notice the "i" beside a gas cap type opening on the driver side front fender? The Concept is shown as a hybrid plug-in SUV.

I'm sure Mercedes will be pleased with the giant salute to them on the roof of the X7 as well, turns out the three pointed star can go on more than the front/rear end of a car

I pretty much like this and it will be a home run for BMW even in the dumbed-down for production version that we're probably getting.

The tail and side are excellent.

The ONLY attribute about the face that is wrong are the oversized kidneys. Tone those down in size 50% and keep the squinty lights.

This is gorgeous.

BUT the 7 Series concept was gorgeous and we got bland garbage that looked like the old model. The 8 Series concept was gorgeous. BUT the prototypes showed that BMW didn't have the courage to be bold.

Dammit, BMW, be bold.

@MD- Oddly enough bold sells. Even in the regretable Bangle design years at BMW, both the 7 Series and the 5 Series set sales records for each model even though they had polarizing styling for the day.

That was bold and hideous. This is bold and gorgeous but BMWs are bland and dull in production form.

PS increasing sales over the previous model is one thing, but record sales they didn't achieve.

There really isn't a large 3-row SUV that sets the design world afire. Just looking at this X7 Concept, disregarding the exaggerated design elements and it's pretty mundane, to the point of being completely indistinct. Could be confused for a Land Cruiser. At least with a GLS or Range Rover (I know, not 3-row) they can be pretty quickly identified. Regarding the grille, I sure hope they don't go with something as audacious and gawdy as the one on this concept.

The double Kidney Grill has been a BMW symbol that has united the designs for decades - Pontiac also had a double grill design for years.

With the Current STYLE being these HUGE Cow Catcher style Grills - especially on Audi and Lexus - Compared to those two - this design seems less cartoonish. The problem is BMW has been known for its Higher Style less garish designs - even the Bangle cars were a surprise for most. I suspect a slight less garish but similar design (SLightly slimmer chrome) - will make it to market and sell well.

Hmm..I see way too much Lexus LX570 in the slab-sided design. Not really in love with it.

BMW is clearly still struggling how to handle the twin kidneys. In my opinion, smaller would be better. Its channeling Edsel Ford a bit too much https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edsel#/media/File:1958_Corsair_Daten.jpg

Smaller and lower would be better. This vehicle with a front end that looked swoopy like the Cayenne and less slab-sided would be better.

Looks Cadillac design inspired. Long straight lines gives it a boxy stylized appearance verses a functional appearance.

Why bother making concepts when the real one will just look like a stretched X5.....
