#LAAUTOSHOW: STUD or DUD — Does The All-new Infiniti QX50 Move The Needle For You At All?
One brand that seems to churn out an OK product but can't seem to find its legs is Nissan's luxury division, Infiniti. While its sport-utility vehicles have traction in the market, I just can't seem to understand every single one of its other products are so underwhelming to me.

I am pretty sure the buyer of an Infiniti is someone who wants a nicer than average vehicle but is cost conscious. So, rather than get a comparable Audi, BMW, Lexus or Mercedes-Benz, they opt for the typically feature-rich Infiniti or Genesis.

2017 Los Angeles Auto Show

One vehicle that gave the company a boost was the FX when it first debuted. The first-gen FX could be found just about everywhere and its VQ six-cylinder sang down the block as it drove away. The second-gen had similar success but got stale quick in a competitive space.

I want to see the all-new QX50 take on the competition much like the first-gen FX but I just can't figure out if this vehicle even has any juice.

So, I turn to you, Spies: What say you? Is the all-new Infiniti QX50 a STUD or DUD?

Infiniti's press release follows:

INFINITI reveals all-new 2019 QX50 in Los Angeles

  • Distinctive proportions, with INFINITI's signature Powerful Elegance design
  • VC-Turbo: The world's first production-ready variable compression ratio engine
  • ProPILOT Assist: Intuitive technologies support the driver
  • Engineered around you: All-new platform provides improved space and efficient packaging, with high quality cabin materials

LOS ANGELES – INFINITI revealed the all-new 2019 QX50 – a luxury mid-size crossover with world-first technologies, standout design and unrivaled interior space, all on an entirely new platform – ahead of the Los Angeles Auto Show.

"The 2019 QX50 is the most important vehicle we have ever launched, and it embodies everything the brand stands for: Beautiful design, advanced technology and empowering performance. As a luxury mid-size crossover, it's the right vehicle at the right time in one of the world's fastest growing segments."

Christian Meunier, INFINITI Global Division Vice President

Remaining true to the design of the QX50 Concept and QX Sport Inspiration, the 2019 QX50's aerodynamic exterior reinterprets INFINITI's distinctive Powerful Elegance design language and signature design cues for the crossover segment. It combines a confident stance with intelligent packaging, while deep character lines highlight the influence of human artistry in the design process.

The 2019 QX50 is built on an all-new platform, featuring a front-engine, front-wheel-drive-based layout. Engineered with flexibility of application in mind, this platform sets new standards for refinement, rigidity and interior space in the compact premium crossover segment.

The unrivaled interior space, artistic application of high quality materials, and advanced craftsmanship make the cabin as welcoming and comfortable as it is flexible. Driver-centric, yet passenger-minded, the 2019 QX50 offers a package of technologies to enhance the driving experience. Its asymmetric layout and calm, connected ambience is designed to meet different needs of the driver and passengers.

The VC-Turbo engine is the world's first production-ready variable compression ratio engine, transforming on demand. A breakthrough in combustion engine design, the 2.0-liter VC-Turbo engine adjusts its compression ratio to optimize power and efficiency. It combines the power of a 2.0-liter turbocharged gasoline engine with the torque and efficiency of a four-cylinder diesel engine. A compelling alternative to diesel, it challenges the notion that only hybrid and diesel powertrains can deliver high torque and efficiency.

ProPILOT Assist technologies react discreetly to certain driving situations, supporting the driver with a range of empowering driver assist features, placing them in total control.

MUCH BETTER ! - ( can't believe I am saying that about an Infiniti ), although the console is too gimmicky, the interior is way nicer and the outside is less gimmicky, are they looking at Volvo for inspiration perhaps?

I don't know if Volvo injected a bit of a more slick looking product but it is much better than anything else in their lineup.

I agree the center stack is rather...Nissan like? IDK, something's off there. Rest of the interior is great though. Impressive for production spec.

A bit until I read 4cyl only and CVT only.... It looks less rugged and more like a car on stilts giving away some of it's Nissan roots... Then we get to the tired two screen interior and I am just disappointed with that choice.

Of greater concern is that it's FWD-based. No mention of AWD, which is weird and — frankly — concerning.

If it's only offered in FWD it's DOA, IMHO.

Enough alphabet soup for you? ;)

00R - I think the left rear badge on the hatch lid says "AWD"

My critique:
+ Exterior styling is much better than previous Infinitis. No longer hideous.
- The dash, especially the center stack, doesn’t look premium
- Lose the quilted mattress top seats
- For the most part, it still looks like a nice mid-market vehicle, and not like a luxury contender

In its segment, it would be last on my shopping list for sure. Most annoying is that the vents on the center dash look like they came of any Japanese or Korean model from over a decade ago.

When I looked at the current model, I was greatly surprised to not find a power rear lift gate. This press release doesn't say if that has changed. Too few details at this time to see if it can now match the competition. However, a CVT doesn't bode well.

The new QX50 is a beautiful car. I imagine it will do for Infiniti what the Rogue has done for Nissan. What I'm not understanding is why there is such an insinuation that Infiniti makes an inferior vehicle. I've had an M35 & QX70, and both were great looking cars and joys to drive. (I've also had a Mercedes C350 & ML350, and a Lexus GX460.) I would take an Infiniti any day over a Lexus or Acura. And for the value, over a number of the German brands.
