Genesis Plans To Start With 85 To 90 Dealerships
Despite lingering tension over the impending split of the Genesis and Hyundai retail networks, dealers understand that for Genesis to be profitable, it can have only a limited number of stores.

That's according to Brian Smith, who joined Hyundai Motor America in October as its first COO since 2007. Smith confirmed to Automotive News that Genesis is aiming for just 85 to 90 stand-alone stores next year, some of which could be awarded to dealers outside the current Hyundai network.

This should prove interesting. The Genesis brand will benefit from the product offering of a well-established and reputable manufacturer (Hyundai), while suffering from a tiny sales and support network that's typical of an upstart (less than 90 stores across the nation).

Imagine buying a car from a company that has only 1 or 2 dealers/service-centers in your state.

As a basis for comparison Tesla has 175 service centers and 350 mobile service vans.

Don't know why you got down-votes. Thanks for the comparison.

@The Steve The plan with Genesis is NOT to cover every nook and cranny of the USA but to cover likely markets where the vehicles will sell. From there the number will increase. Supposedly, 2 and possibly 3 crossovers will be ready for the dealers when they open. Expect heavy coverage in California, New York, Florida, and Texas.

If Hyundai is serious about growing the Genesis brand, this quantity of shops is just a start. They'll pay attention to what market areas grow & then add shops accordingly. Like Tesla I guess.

@fiftysix No LOL needed. You're an idiot. Hyundai-Kia is a juggernaut. FCA is a disaster about to implode.

I never understood why Hyundai continues to invest in KIA, should use that resource more on Genesis and focus just on Hyundai. KIA and Hyundai are overlapping.

Actually they aren't. Hyundai is the value brand. Kia is gradually moving to near-premium. Genesis is premium. Add in Jeep and Ram--which they will--and you have a dynasty.

@fiftysix Hyundai-Kia is essentially one company at this point. They are clearly looking to expand given them putting feelers out to buy FCA and now cooperating. H-K has everything except pickups and real 4x4s. In five years, Dodge and Chrysler will be gone. Genesis will be better established and the Italians will have retreated home to the bosom of the Italian government propping them up.

Limited dealership, customer service/experience, & online purchasing. A lot of high line brands are suffering because of competition, less profits = less service.

The Kia/Hyundai/Genesis soup looks like they are emulating the old GM business model.

Seems to be in line with how Lexus launched with 80 dealerships and 63k units sold in its first full year. Genesis is on track to sell fewer than 20k units this year, but with the addition of the G70, I would guess that might double in 2018.

Indeed. And what is also true of the current state of Genesis cars and their owners is that the cars are attracting the "right" people and those people are very satisfied with their customer experience. Hyundai has been very clear that Genesis owners are to be happy and the dealers who have made that happen best are on Hyundai's short list for Genesis franchises.
