Study Shows That Dealers Are Steering Buyers Away From EV Vehicles

The numbers seem to speak for themselves: Despite all the talk about electric vehicles, Americans largely seem uninterested in buying them.

But a new mystery-shopper study suggests soft EV sales are at least in part the result of dealerships steering customers away from EVs and toward mainstream models the showroom staffers feel more comfortable selling.

“This lack of support for the EV shopper lessens the likelihood that they will make the decision to go electric” says Todd Markusic, vice president-research at Ipsos RDA, a market research and consulting firm that commissioned the study.

You'd think the readily available market share numbers would be enough to show us that EVs have always been a niche, and have not gained much traction in decades of being on the scene. Worldwide and US market share is in the very low single-digits. No study is needed to tell us that.

EVs are constantly improving. New battery tech is constantly happening. The prices are falling, usability is increasing, styling is getting better, range is getting longer, recharging infrastructure is getting built out. All good things for EVs and their owners!

At *this* time, EVs still represent a tiny niche, but that niche is slowly growing. Assuming a few breakthroughs (in several areas, including clean, sustainable, power generation), EVs may eventually catch on in a big way... just not for now.
