Honda Confirms That Takata Airbags Have Claimed Another Life - Isn't It Time For Recalls To Be MANDATORY?

Honda Motor Co.'s North American unit and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Tuesday that a ruptured airbag inflator of Takata Corp. used in a Honda Civic caused the death of the driver on July 10.

The 2004 model car involved in the crash in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, was under recall but had not received the repair, the company said, adding that the ruptured inflator in the vehicle was not the original one installed.

How would the government enforce a mandatory recall - make the cars illegal to be on the road- which would simultaneously cancel all their insurance and leave incredible potential liabilities? The government cannot even get all the people who do not have valid drivers licenses off the road.

This is about as enforceable as the law in Paramus NJ that said you could not take a Bath on a Saturday night!

And worse - the inflator was NOT the one originally installed - were REPLACEMENT inflators recalled specifically - I could see a dealership refusing to do the work on a replaced part unless IT also was recalled - which I would doubt = or CHARGING for a replacement at full tilt labor and parts - which would be extreme as well.

Well stated.

As long as the owner is notified and aware of the recall and the risks, then I'm waving the "self accountability" flag.

As a vehicle owner, you should do what you can reasonably do to mitigate or eliminate risks. In this specific case, contact your dealer, let them know you're affected, and have them order the (likely back-ordered) replacement airbag. Then when it comes in, get your vehicle into the shop to it updated. Pretty simply, right?

Besides, if the dealer doesn't have a replacement, you can't get it repaired. I've been waiting for two years for one of the airbags to be replaced in my Dodge truck. Every time I check there's no replacements available.
