Ford Extends Takata Recall Back To 2004 With 400,000 Rangers Recalled

Ford is recalling the Ranger. No, not the one they’re likely to show on stage at Detroit in about a month’s time. Rather, they’re calling back nearly 400,000 of the old Rangers. You know, the ones they stopped producing way back in the, uh, wow, 2012 model year.

In fact, the recalled units stem from much further back than that, with the company saying it will replace the airbags in 391,394 units of the 2004 through 2006 model-year Ford Ranger. Yes, Virginia, this is another problem related to Takata airbags.

I like the "too old to worry about" sentiments in the article. At some point, manufacturers need to have their responsibility sunset.

I think this is a good move on Ford's part, recognizing that their customers can still be using affected Ford products, and they deserve to be supported. Today, the average age of vehicles in the US is 11.5 years, and climbing.

You're doing the right thing, Ford. Thank you.

Basically every airbag Takata has ever made is now subject to recall

My 4Runner is a 2005. Made in Japan in Dec 2004. It only has 232k (kilometers) on it. IT is barely broken in. I would still like some coverage for a major life long part like an airbag or a rusted out frame (Tacoma) but mfg's need limits too.

I cannot believe that Takata can possibly absorbed the phenomenal expense of replacing ten of millions of air bags.
