The extent to which high performance SUVs have conquered the market despite the fact that the very title is ironic is something that can be taken as a good sign or a bad one. Yes, it’s a signal that the sedans we all know and love are being diluted at best and phased out at worst in favor of spending that R&D cash on SUVs. On the other hand, crossover SUVs have gotten powerful and agile enough that they’re actually pretty fun to drive.

It is like BMW making an X3M model. You can, but I am not sure you should, let alone giving it 500hp. Buy really good snow tires if you hope to have traction in the winter.

I think these sorts of vehicles appeal to people who are terrified of owning a real sports car so they put all the components into a tippy crossover which will be more unwieldy to drive at the limit given cg and weight transfer issues. Ironically, they see the crossover as being safer.

But of course this is where the market is now. More people want 4dr SUV's then ever before. As long as gas is relatively cheap this is it. The sedan is going the way of the Dodo bird and will pretty extinct within the next 5 years. I don't think that people are terrified of owning a sports car. I think people want a sports cars with 4 doors, lots of utility. I predict that the Mustang and Camaro will evolve into hybrid AWD's 4dr muscle car SUV's with optional EV's. Just a matter of time.
