Oregon Drivers Flipping Out Over The Prospect That They May Have To Pump Their Own Gas
The new year is but two days old, and already we've got a nasty online debate on our hands. But don't worry, this isn't about politics. No, follow along to the Pacific Northwest, where the fine people of Oregon are having themselves an internet freak-out for the ages over the prospect of having to pump their own gas. The horror.

Up until January 1, 2018, Oregon was one of two states—the other being good old New Jersey—that required every filling station be staffed by attendants who pump your gas for you. But last spring, the state legislature passed a law allowing gas stations in rural counties with less than 40,000 residents to abandon the full-service model and let customers man the pumps themselves. The new law went into effect on Monday.

Childish behavior.. It's like these people never travel out of state.

They probably don't. LOL They are probably too busy with their vegan Subaru macrame parties and growing free-range broccoli.

Just charge 10 cents a gallon less for self serve, and they will overcome the fear quickly.

Charge different pricing for the customer preferred service. Self-serve would cost less of course. The market will reign-in those pesky conservative-leaning drivers. lol

I for one like that I don't have to get out of my car to pump gas. It is single digits temperature outside. On top of that, it creates jobs.

Understood, but 12 degrees this week didn't stop me from filling the tank. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do, it only takes 5 mins max.

Besides in most cases the cure single digits is to move to a sunbelt sate.

Regardless, I like it that I don't need to get out of the car.

"...It gives people jobs..."?!?

Lets look at this particular type of comment/sentiment here. Simple jobs for simple people - i get it. But read up on the manufacturing industry in the US.

Is pumping gas - a job that requires "skill" or special training? How much do "gas attendants" make?

The gas attendants must be making enough. I know one that has been working at the same place for over 10 years. As for as skills, same goes for flipping burgers and cashiers. These are starter jobs.

This is pure comedy!

"transients..." ...hahaha

Let me guess...the main opposition to "self serve" fueling services are fuel station owners & people who rarely drive out of the state. Their staff probably make a lot off tips alone. And then there will probably be a new competitive market to see which stations keep the "full service" going.

But obviously, the full service model isn't just old but may cost more. Otherwise, all these 1000s of stations across the country are doing well with "self serve" pumps.

To be honest, 2 weeks ago I saw an older lady have a near melt-down at a gas pump. She parked at a specific pump & then the machine wasn't reading her debit card. I managed to pay & pump a full tank before she got to the PIN entry screen on her pump. Poor lady.

...but she pumped her own gas just fine.

Exactly! Get an electric car and all of this would be moot.

Pumping gas -- how lame!

I continue to believe that stations should have at least one person available to service handicapped customers - and in fact that is the law in most states - although you would be hard pressed to actually get that person out of the "cubicle" to service them.

Since I pay with the only currently Legally accepted way to pay all debts - ie - cash - I generally have to go to stations that have a person there - even if I pump my own gas. And since I travel regularly in many states - I really have a hard time finding them in many places.

However - I admit I am a New Jersey resident - and really do not see the issue - our gas is generally cheaper than the states around NJ where they do not have attendants - and as was mentioned above - it does create jobs. Anyone who would suggest that the companies will reduce the prices of gas with their elimination will get a hearty LAUGH from me.

Umm....
There's a call feature on pumps specifically for that purpose
