Ford Cancels 2020 Fusion Redesign - Future In Doubt

I’ve got bad news for those of us who don’t want to live in an automotive landscape solely populated with bloated SUVs and slightly less bloated crossovers: we’re boned. In case you’re still hopeful, here’s a bit of news that should kill that optimism: Ford just cancelled their refresh of their Fusion mid-size sedan, because no one cares.

The Detroit News obtained a letter sent by Ford to suppliers that announced that the planned redesign for the 2020 model year Fusion had been cancelled. This doesn’t mean the Fusion itself is gone, just that Ford doesn’t think a redesign is worth it, or, perhaps more likely, a more dramatic redesign/re-casting of the Fusion nameplate may be in the works.

Yet, Toyota is previewing the newly redesigned Avalon, an even smaller segment.

Problems with Detroit 3 is, they easily give up on a segment that yields less profit (i.e. Chrysler gave up 200) and put all eggs in my basket (i.e. Jeep and full-size trucks). Sure CUV/SUV are a thing now, but when gas price is up, people will go back to sedans.

Point is, diversify is key!

WE do not yet know what was cancelled. It is not unusual for a company to have more than one option for replacement - or refresh. If they cancelled a refresh to bring a compete replacement sooner it might not be what is being thought of here.

Still - FORD is a truck company - and its FORD ONE plan where the cars are the same around the world -did not work - AMericans expect larger and more powerful cars - and the European models are not that.

It would not surprise me if the Fusion becomes an every man's Model S...which is ironic given how the Model S looks like a Fusion.

Ford is moving rapidly toward electrification. They are probably gambling on getting there first in the CamCord wars.

I would have thought the news would be to cancel Taurus. A 2020 model likely is close to done with test prototypes. They must realize the Camry/Accord beats their new Fusion still 2 years away from introduction, so better to cut losses now. They may either speed up a new replacement design, change direction toward Model 3 EV competitor, or direct resources on trucks/SUV/crossover vehicles. They could also follow the Honda approach where one common platform spans compact and midsize.

Mazda is hardly in a good place. The 6 is a complete sales disaster. The 3 isn't challenging any of its competitors for volume. Even its good crossovers are also-rans in their segments.

No surprise here. I've stated before that in 5 years the midsize sedan in the US will be if not extinct then very close to extinction. Probably the last holdouts will be Toyota, Honda, and Nissan and maybe Hyundai. I think GM will be getting out next. The CUV/SUV market is very strong and I see no sign of abating especially since the developement of hybrids, plugins and full EV's. This is a forgone conclusion.
