DRIVEN + VIDEO: Did The X1, GLA And Q3's Lives Just Get Harder? All-new Volvo XC40 Brings The HEAT!

DRIVEN + VIDEO: Did The X1, GLA And Q3's Lives Just Get Harder? All-new Volvo XC40 Brings The HEAT!
When Volvo first revealed images of its all-new XC40 sport-utility vehicle, we weren't so convinced. It looked interesting but would it carry the same weigh of its bigger siblings, the XC90 and XC60?

Well, we found out in Los Angeles. It does.

Looking very slick and boasting functionality, the all-new XC40 deserves your attention. If you're considering the Audi Q3, BMW X1 or Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class, the XC40 brings something different to the table.

While the XC90 is much more conservative than the XC40, the 90 has done an impressive job chiseling away marketshare away from the Germans. Is it on track to continue doing so with the 40?

Check out Edmunds' video review below. You may walk away surprised.

Join Edmunds Senior Writer Mark Takahashi in Spain as he checks out the 2019 Volvo XC40, and find out why he's truly impressed with Volvo's smallest SUV.

Mark tests out the T5 R-Design, first doing a walk-around and then hitting the roads of the Spanish countryside. You'll get a sense of how pleasant the XC40 is to drive and how it hits all the right buttons for a compact SUV.

Q: When does the 2019 Volvo XC40 go on sale?
A: It should go on sale in the spring of 2018.

Q: How much is the 2019 Volvo XC40?
A: The 2019 XC40 T5 Momentum will start at $36,195, and the T5 R-Design will start at $38,695. Fully loaded, the XC40 T5 R-Design will break $45,000.

Q: How much horsepower does the 2019 Volvo XC40 have?
A: There will be two versions of the XC40 available: the T5 Momentum and the T5 R-Design. Both use a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (248 horsepower, 258 lb-feet of torque), an eight-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Press junkets that wine and dine aside, if the XC40 is as lackluster in its execution as the S90 and XC90 then the Germans have nothing to worry about. The line about Volvo chiseling away market share from the Germans is patently false. The XC90's turbo engine is excessively unrefined which is why it is not challenging the segment it's in for supremacy. The S90 is no pinnacle of refinement either. Volvo would be a great Acura/Subaru type of brand, but the Germans have more to worry about from Genesis than Volvo. But hey, it could be worse. At least Volvo doesn't have the pathetic sales volume of Jaguar or Alfa Romeo.

Did anyone, ever, ask for an optional bright red carpet?

What an odd choice for a display vehicle interior.

Carries the 25% European price premium.

That will have to be cash on the hood.

I actually like white vehicles with black/red interiors but would never want the carpet red.... Carpet should be black. Seats can be red or two tone....

Volvo's current problem is not how they look (even with red interiors) but the cheap little engines under the hood. It is too soon for any premium (or aspiring to be) brand to have migrated almost (if not completely) to turbo 4s. Their plan to go fully electric or hybrid within a year is also nonsensical.

Bottom line is what their sales are doing. If they are going up then obviously they are doing something right.

The reviews so far indicate that it handles more like a hot hatch and it's 0-60 is in the low 6 second range. Those so called cheap engines have also gotten positive reviews. Further the S90 sedan scored very well against the Audi A6 and Mercedes E class recently. Going hybrid or electric is nonsencical? Carsync where do you think the auto industry is going in terms of engine propulsion within the next 5 to 10 years? Hint hint-It's not with gasoline engines.....

Bravo everyone, you missed the point. Volvo is no longer a "European" car company looking to compete directly with MB, Audi, BMW. It is a Chinese Company with a European store front. The Volvo Products of today are sounding pilots for future Chinese Cars from Geely. Link & Co will have all this content and at 1/2 the price. Otherwise Volvo would be focused on something that makes it unique in the segments it sells/offers products. Volvo used to stand for supreme safety, reliability, (remembering the 250,000 club) and surprisingly, class leading seat comfort. Now, none of those aspects of a Volvo are prevalent, only a stream of new mid-range product, sold by an unprofitable dealer network in the US so we can get used to the idea of Chinese built cars/suv's in the USA. Soon enough you will be able to get all this Volvo Content, on suv's/cars at half the price...bought on-line from Link & CO. then Volvo will have served its purpose, introduce the american consumer to Chinese automotive technology. Volvo is a showcase for the future, not a long term play. There is a plan, a long term plan, that will eventually see Volvo as a fringe product, and the parent company Geely selling many hundreds of thousands of cars, are you used to the idea of a Chinese car yet... you will be.
