There Is A New Sheriff In Town As The Worlds Largest Automaker And It ISN'T Volkswagen
Renault-Nissan Chairman Carlos Ghosn said the French-Japanese automaking alliance is the world's leading automobile group by unit sales despite rival Volkswagen AG delivering a record 10.7 million vehicles in 2017, a 4.3 percent rise.

VW, which was the world's biggest automaker by volume in 2016, is still dealing with the fallout from its diesel-rigging scandal, but it benefited from economic recoveries in Russia and Brazil, and growth in China, its largest single market.

Became #1 by buying Mitsubishi. Is there anyone who would take Renault/Nissan over Volkswagen's stable of brands (VW, Audi, Porsche, Bentley, Lambo)? Didn't think so.

The most important number is how much profit, and that's where Toyota is #1 for a wide margin. And yes I'd take VW's brands over the alliance any day.

LOL VW Group sold 10.74 million according to them and Nissan group sold 10.6 million but they say they are #1 because they don't think VW should count 200,000 heavy vehicles... this is like high school girls slap fighting... At the end of the day nobody cares at all the only thing that matters is how much money they made and for VW they still cant crack the US market so they really are irrelevant..

Actually - Nissan and Renault is not a single company - They are separate companies and Renault does not own a majority of Nissan Stock - about 44% total.
AND - Nissan only owns 34% of Mitsubishi as well. While in Japan 34% is considered controlling interest - in a Proxy vote - it is not.

While the three companies operate in some ways cooperatively - they still have many separate platforms and engines - and if they were USA companies -they would not be considered to be a "group".

On the other hand - VW does own its operating companies outright - including the last one they did not - Porsche - when the family sold out the remaining shares of stock. GM owns its subsidiaries - and Toyota does too as far as those considered for the sales race. Toyota owns about 10% of Subaru - but cannot consider their sales as part of a group.
