Is A $11.52 Congestion Charge The Answer To New York City's Problems Or Is It Merely A Money Grab?
Owning a vehicle or commuting into New York City just got a bit scarier. That's because conversations from about 10 years ago have cropped back up.

That's right. A congestion charge for Manhattan island is making the rounds again.

According to Governor Cuomo, New York City is choking on its own growth — more specifically, vehicular and foot traffic. Although it was pointed out that government officials decided to alter traffic patterns on main throughfares and also decided to reengineer avenues so that there were dedicated turning lanes, which effectively removed a lane for traffic to flow through, that seems to have fallen on deaf ears.

In addition, the transit system is broken and needs some more tender, loving care. How will the city and state obtain the funds they need?

The answer may just be the folks who drive into New York City below 60th Street. That includes trucks, taxis and ride sharing services, and even residents who have autos to get around. That's right: No one gets out of this congestion fee.

Considering crossing a bridge or tunnel costs upwards of $15 these days, what does an additional $11-12 fee to get to the busiest part of Manhattan sound like to you? Would it the barrier needed to alleviate traffic OR is it merely another cash grab by the state government to misappropriate the funds down the road?

Driving a car into the busiest parts of Manhattan could cost $11.52 under a major proposal prepared for Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo that would make New York the first city in the United States with a pay-to-drive plan...

...Trucks would pay $25.34, and taxis and for-hire vehicles could see surcharges of $2 to $5 per ride. The pricing zone would cover Manhattan south of 60th Street. In a key change from past efforts, drivers would not have to pay if they entered Manhattan by all but two of the city-owned East River bridges, which are now free to cross, as long as they bypassed the congestion zone...

It's a tax for those who can afford to pay it. Like the world's most expensive toll road, Highway 407, in Ontario, Canada (over 50 cents per mile).

Its both. Its almost impossible to drive in NYC any more. But once installed the politicians will raise the tax higher and higher to support their pet projects. When federal income taxes were first introduced we were told that it was only temporary...how did that work out. The new tax will hurt lower and middle class residents the most driving many to a subway system that is antiquated and broken.

Well, here's the funny part.

Di Blasio is actually against a congestion charge as he feels it will impact normal working folks. Cuomo is the one pushing for the charge.

Just a reminder that nobody self-identifies as "Alt-Left"!

Alt.Left is a derisive term used only by Alt.Right-ers (Nazis, White Supremacists, hate groups, etc.) to indicate "not one of us."

OH - Nonsense Matt - again you do not even know the HISTORY behind such proposals.

A similar Plan - was initially presented by then Mayor Bloomberg - a right wing Republican - 10 years ago - and it was rejected by the state.

The idea that this is purely a leftist suggestion is simply wrong.

Then - as NOW - since it cannot be moved - the problem was with the location of the Holland Tunnel that would effectively double the toll for people entering the city which would have required Port Authority approval of both states - and NJ refused.

Long ago - my mother said that Large parking lots should be set up just outside of Manhattan in NY and NJ - and from there - the only vehicles allowed in the borough would be Medallion cabs and commercial delivery. That and improved buses due to greatly reduced traffic - plus the Subway should then be the powered transportation. Eventually - either that will be done OR businesses will MOVE their support help out of the city because of the added tolls. THat would - in the end - cost more than they could make with such a toll.

@TheSteve Just as your tribe labels everyone they hate, "Alt-Right". MANY and I mean MANY refer to the irrational, psychotic, Gestapo-like Liberals as "Alt-Left".

@TomM So you're saying that idiocy is OK because idiocy has happened before. I've often how a 1%-er like you can be so mindlessly Alt-Left.

Chiming in here.

@TheSteve is right. No one identifies as alt left and if you bring it up to anyone they'll simply say that the alt left doesn't exist. In reality, there is an extreme left-wing movement happening in the country, just as there is the an extreme right-wing movement happening in parallel.

@Tom — Technically Bloomberg was a republican during his tenure but I think we can all agree there's nothing right wing about Bloomberg. Remember, this is the same guy who wanted to tax soft drinks and what not based on what he/the gov't thought was "right."

@00R Those who say it doesn't exist are Liberals. Get into a group of conservatives and most decidedly the term IS used. Given that the media is the kneeling pleasure boy of the DNC, you're not going to hear "Alt Left" come out of the mouthes of the talking heads, but scratch the surface and...

I don't disagree, Matt, as noted above.

My boy, Ben Shapiro, has some very cogent points regarding the alt left movement.

MDarringer wrote “...Those who say it [The Alt.Left] doesn't exist are Liberals...”

Again Matt, you don’t see what’s there. You see what you want to see. I wrote “…nobody self-identifies as ‘Alt-Left’…” Self-identifies means an individual or group who calls themselves by that name. Note there IS a group who self-identifies as “Alt.Right”! They chose that moniker for themselves. The Alt.Right is the collective of Nazis, White Supremacists (AKA “White Nationalists”), anti-Semites, racists, anti-LGBTQ, Islamophobes, and other hate groups.

MDarringer also wrote “…Get into a group of conservatives and most decidedly the term IS used…”

Indeed, the term “Alt.Left” is used by:

(1) Alt-Right-ers to signify “not one of us.” The apply it to liberal thinkers, Democrats and supporters of that party, socialists, LGBTQ people, Black Lives Matters supporters, #MeToo supporters, equal rights supporters, non-Islamophobes, environmentalists, climate change scientists, etc.

(2) “Talking Heads” (AKA “News personalities”) who repeat what Alt.Right-ers say.

Non-radicalized, non-extremist conservatives do not share the Alt.Right’s hateful, extremist, and radicalized values and perspectives.

Personally, I respect many genuine, level-headed conservative thinkers (strengths include: structure, organization, stability, gradual progress while giving people time to adapt to change, tradition, familiarity, security, etc.) I do not have high regard for radical extremists, be they political or religious, be they on the extreme (and extremist) “left” (liberal) or “right” (conservative).

You can see examples of this dangerous, radicalized extremism in religious terrorists, who believe all other religions are evil. You can also see this in political extremists, such as people with a Party alliance who believe any member of the “other” Party is evil, corrupt, out to ruin the country, etc. Extremism is a sickness. Hate is a sickness.

Watch for hate, or the haters who cry “bullies!” when someone challenges them (like the Tiki-Torch Nazi marchers crying about the anti-Nazi protesters). Learn to distinguish between the Nazis, and the side that America stood on, when it opposed Nazis, and what they stood for, in World War II.

Peace, and out.

I will occasinaly drive the family into the city for a day trip. Taking a young family of 5 on mass transit is expensive and cumbersome. Tunnel tolls and parking are high enough. This would forsure be the tipping point that would prevent me from going in for entertainment. NYC’s loss.

The stated reason for the new TAX on cars is to improve the Subway system
Over the decades they have repeatedly raised one Bridge toll - or Road toll to impressive numbers to support the subway system - while it becomes impossible to afford these tolls - they have kept the subway cost to a miniumum - however it is time to charge the SUbway riders for those improvements.

It's a money grab. If they wanted to solve the problem they would just ban all traffic, and make Manhattan pedestrian only :)
