Polestar's Plan To Challenge The Model 3 Is Not What We Expected

Polestar, Volvo’s performance brand recently relaunched as an all-electric brand, was off to a somewhat awkward but interesting start last year when it unveiled its first vehicle; the Polestar 1.

The car turned out to be a highly expensive plug-in hybrid, which the automaker quickly made sound outdated by announcing that they would bring an all-electric “Tesla Model 3 competitor” to production a year later.

In a new interview, the automaker’s CEO elaborates on those plans.

Bring back a modern version of the P1800 coupe. Some Saint-themed ads. Maybe a movie reboot. But not a BEV.

Ironically, Tesla is more worthy of being called premium than Volvo.

In a lot of ways I like it more than the Model S interior, can't think of any car under $50k with an interior I like more than the Model 3. It might be a matter of personal preference, but I think people will eventually appreciate the clean, uncluttered look over tons of nobs and buttons. It's a very original design that could be the iphone of cars that everyone else will copy. I guess we'll see in a couple years.

More display Model 3s are on the way to Tesla stores, so you can check it out for yourself. Have an open mind before you knock it.

Today - because most of Tesla production is high priced cars - they might qualify for premium status. I still put them in with Volvo - and Buick and Lexus and Infiniti - and Audi - just below the true premium brands.

However - with its attempt to move upmarket - I suspect that Volvo will NOT produce a car in the $35,000 range all electric. I do not believe that they can make a profit doing it. ANd I do not believe even Tesla can - unless they produce 50,000 a month. ANd I do not believe we will see those volumes for a long time as well

I think they will prioritize the higher-end trims with higher margins. Dual motor and performance versions will be out sometime this year and should balance out the base model. There is also a $10k add-on that eventually most people will get, Autopilot. The hardware is already there, that is pure margin when it gets activated (unless a cpu upgrade is needed, even then it will still be $8k of margin).

Looks like a Mustang had sex with an Infinti G35.

I saw a video review of a Model 3. List price on this car was $56K USD. I don't even want to know what that price would be in Canada. It is a premium car and if fully optioned it will be a very nice ride for those who have a minimalist design sense. Hating Tesla is like hating the smartest kid in class. You can waste your time being jealous or buckle down and get your own A+.
