SPIED + VIDEO: The All-new BMW 8-Series Gets TEASED In Camo And In ACTION

It’s been quite a while since BMW launched a successor to the first-gen 8-Series coupe that made waves back in the early 1990s. Well, its time has come.

Although we’ve seen the concept vehicle, now it’s time to start getting a bit amped up for the production model. You know, the car you’ll actually see on the streets. It must be heading for a Geneva Motor Show (GIMS) debut because the company released more photos and an all-new video teasing the high-end luxury coupe.

So, what can we expect?

It seems that much of what we saw with the concept will make it to the production vehicle. That includes the vehicle’s overall proportions, air curtain vent behind the front wheels and a relatively small greenhouse.

As spotted in leaked 8-Series photographs, the front and rear ends appear to be a bit more conservative than the rather aggressive approach of the concept. From what my ears are picking up, you better believe there will be a V8 powerplant making this puppy sing. We’re guessing the standard car will be an 850i and the M8 will be the 600+ horsepower variant using the M5’s motor as a starting point.

The new BMW 8 Series Coupe; running warmup laps in Italy. “The test drives under the most severe conditions show that we are right on target with our concept for the new BMW 8 Series Coupe. The vehicle dynamics values already achieved are absolutely impressive” says Klaus Fröhlich BMW Group Board Member, Development, discussing the initial track tests.

I am sure many here will consider a pretty good looking vehicle -However - it is likely that this car will cost WELL NORTH of $100,000 (especially in performance versions) - and based on that - sorry - it does not look it.

Today - to be worth that kind of money - a car really has to have something special about it - this one is a safe - BMW looking coupe - and even looks like most 3 series cars of the last couple of decades.

Until BMW styles their larger cars either first - or obviously different from the cheaper ones - or BOTH - they will remain good cars that just don't get anyone's heart racing to buy them anymore. (If the large ones ever really sold to begin with - which they really did not). Obviously - there is a lot of money to be made at this level - so BMW will soldier on - catering to those who are completely loyal to the marque. But cars like this are not going to a second look from buyers of other brands.

I agree. If they had gone populist and created a big "muscle" BMW for a base of $50K it would resurrect the coupe market. The problem with the 2/4/8 Series coupes is that for their expensive prices they are nothing special. Stylistically this looks like a BMW Mustang almost as if BMW grafted their face onto a Mustang.

Couldn't agree more, Tom. It's certainly going to be interesting to see what happens in this segment when the new 8 debuts. There are two very attractive offerings in the LC500 and S550 (to be S560) Coupe. While the Lexus and Mercedes are almost on opposite ends of the driving experience (AMG models excepted), both of them embody exquisite style and design, using different approaches.

More than likely, BMW will look to take out the LC500. If the M550i and new M5 are any indication, then the new 8 will be incredibly quick and handle extremely well. But are buyers really looking for that? Style and road presence might be the more critical factors in a purchase decision, which may leave the 8 Series in the lurch. The new 8, in leaked form, looks nothing more than an evolution of the previous 6 Series Coupe. While i found that 6-Coupe attractive, it didn't necessarily make me want to get in the car and be seen. The LC and S-Coupe have that effect.

A BMW Mustang indeed...without the reliability of the Mustang.
