Nissan CEO Refuses To Throw In The Towel On 370Z Successor

It appears that Nissan’s Z sports car is far from dead, despite the fact that there are no official plans yet to replace the ageing 370Z.

Nissan’s chief planning officer Philippe Klein told Automotive News that the reports of the Z’s death are greatly exaggerated.

When asked though if Nissan is developing a successor to the 370Z, which has been on the market since 2009, he avoided to give a clear answer. “We’re working on it and it’s very present, but I have no indication to give you,” Klein said.

Unfortunately Nissan went the wrong way with the 370Z from the 350Z. The trend is forced induction smaller engines. So time to shelf the Z again and bring out a 200/240SX.

Don't quite understand the Z with the GT-R available. Lower price point?

I test drove one 3 yrs back. The interior was and IS so outdated. The car even then was in need of exterior & interior changes years before that. Then when finance told me of the monthly lease pymt - $300 more than my infuniti q40 - i felt insulted and left.

It shouldn't be that hard for them to make a pretty good Z car...they have the platform/engine already.

Being that Nissan has partnered with Renault I think it could be a potential win win to take the platform and engine from the new Renault Alpine A110 and design a new Z from that. It has a nice sounding 4 cylinder turbo engine which is shared with the Renault Megane. It has a fantastic mid engine chassis and its very light. It would truly be a great Z. The V6 is to big, too heavy, and too unrefined. The a110 could be the answer.

The Z needs to be priced like the Mustang/Camaro so that it's attainable. The current one is simply too expensive. Then there is styling. The 350/370s are as ugly as green turds in a toilet bowl. The original 240Z is the iconic look that needs to return. Then there are the reliability issues. Fix all that and...

Renault Alpine A110... just googled it, very interesting! Just rebadge it as a 200sx or nx2000 so it’s in a class of its own. I don’t think we have an affordable mid engine sport car other than the Audi tt, which I don’t consider it affordable anymore.

Edit: tt is not mid engine

Darringer-Have you looked at the price of a Mustang GT premium with average options. I don't have to tell you that it is pushing 50K for a 2018. Since there is no V6 option any longer you are left with the 4 cylinder ecoboost. Again if you add options that most people will want you are pushing 40 grand. So it is possible conceivable that there may be room for a Z in the 40 grand range. Another point BMW and Toyota are sharing a platform for the new Supra and Z4(5?). Further it appears they may be sharing engines as well. The BMW is a convertible while the Supra is a coupe. The BMW will probably start at 55K and the Toyota will probably start 10K cheaper. This tells me there is room for a Alpine based Z.

Stop being silly. The 370Z is priced like an optioned Mustang, BUT the base Ecoboost can easily do what the 370Z does for $26K. You're one of those obstructionist people who when he doesn't like what he hears, he muddies the waters.

All around, the 370Z is a stunningly terrible sports car. It is my no means a handling icon. Quite the contrary.

As for the new Supra, it will be another GT86-style failure.

Current 370Z's start at just over 30K. I never said it was a great sports car. It is crap and outdated and Nissan has kept it around for too long. Further most people don't buy stripped out cars(let alone Mustangs). I would agree with you that a current base Ecoboost Mustang has the straightline performance of a Z. Of course the 2017 Ecoboost cars sound like crap. But we are talking about the replacement car for the Z.My point is that if Nissan is going to position the Z against the V8 Mustangs and Camaros you are realistically above 40 grand now in price range. Further the GT 86/BRZ lack of success was strictly about lack of horsepower. That has been the primary complaint. Sharing a platform and engine with BMW will resolve that issue. So a Supra that does 0-60 in the mid to low 4 second range should have no problem selling along side a Mustang GT premium with average options.

It's nice that you can Google the 370Z's base price. The ones sitting on the lot at the dealers gathering dust are WAY more expensive usually, but the discounts are steep. The 2016s got up to $10K off at one point to get rid of them.

The 370Z engine vibrates and buzzes too much. I sold mine.
