President Trump Talks Autos During #SOTU — Which Automaker Do YOU Think Stands To GAIN Most?
Tonight will go down as a historical night. That's because tonight marked the very first State of the Union from President Trump.

You may agree or disagree with the man but one thing is certain: Tonight's speech was powerful and made waves.

As a listener, I did pick up on his talking point regarding the automotive industry. He noted that Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) had shifted production from Mexico to Michigan, which will benefit from a $1B investment, and specifically called out the $1.6B Toyota-Mazda plant to be built in Alabama.

In addition, Trump noted the following:

“In Detroit, I halted Government mandates that crippled America’s autoworkers — so we can get the Motor City revving its engines once again,” he said.

This got me thinking a bit. From an economics perspective there's a whole lot going on in regards to the automotive players — domestic and foreign — in the U.S.

Who do YOU think stands to GAIN the most in the Trump era?

...Love or hate him, and there does not seem to be many people with an opinion in between, President Trump has completely changed the discussion on U.S. automotive production. As a candidate, citizen Trump made U.S. employment one of the cornerstones of his platform and message. He was derided by some, cheered by others, and many simply thought his idea to begin shifting manufacturing back to the high-wage, high-cost environment of the U.S. was simply out of touch with the new reality. As a President, Donald Trump continued his push, and it is fair to say that he has had a massive impact on the discussion, and perhaps the reality, of U.S. production moving back to the United States. And let’s be clear about one point; Mexico, and to a lesser degree Canada, are not part of Trump’s vision of where vehicles for sale in America should be made, NAFTA be damned...

From a pure tax standpoint- the American Manufacturers that actually make a profit will be the winners at this point. Tesla has yet to make a tax profit so it won't help them - but people tend to forget that we have truck manufacturers in the USA as well as GM and Ford. Since FCA is not an American company - it will not save as much as the other two.

Frankly I do not think they will save much from an environmental legislation point of view. That legislation will turn as the congress turns - and that cannot be predicted today.

However - do not blink too long - because the EPA does still exist - and there are still many emissions laws on the books that cannot be stopped by executive decree - and the federal lawsuits already total in the hundreds now. Since the Senate is not filibuster proof - and the Republicans in the senate will save overturning that for more important matters - I do not see major changes in the emissions requirements that will help the manufacturers - since they must plan for the future.

I don't think Trump is a "save the Big 3" kind of guy. He's more "if you sell it her, build it here." Hence his praise of Toyota/Mazda. I do think that when Sergio sells FCA--and that has to happen for the sake of jobs--it would not surprise me if Trump uses the Chinese buyer (most likely) as an example of "the good Chinese" company.

As for SOTU, it was a total win for Trump as he very effectively promoted how America was "great again". The news coverage also did him a favor by cutting to the pissy faces of the Democrats who look obstructionist. Pelosi was a bitch in heat looking around scowling when any of the Democrats clapped.

The readily available record shows Trump routinely takes credit for things. He recently took credit for 2017's zero fatalities in US general aviation (seriously). This is not new.

Don't know why there are clouds up in the sky-"Stormy Weather". I think she should be his first lady. That would at least be the one thing Trump could call honest. Yes Trump takes credit for all that news media reports is positive. Anything negative is either "Fake News", the fault of either Hillary, Obama, and Bush. Trump makes "Archie Bunker" look good.
