Genesis Division Informs Dealers They MUST Have A Dedicted Store To Sell The Brand

Hyundai Motor America and its U.S. Genesis division sent messages to Hyundai dealers this week, alerting them to the formation of an independent Genesis dealer network. Hyundai’s recently created luxury marque wants space between it and its value-focused sister division, and that means the need for standalone stores.

Shared showrooms simply won’t cut it anymore.

lmao, nice way to limit a product that the public already doesn't want. they might as well rebadge all the genesis as hyundai and price them, then maybe they could sales those things.

They are trying to build a luxury brand...if they want success they need independent dealers of the highest quality (ie. Lexus levels of service). They also need to follow the strategy Lexus/Acura/Infiniti brought with their launch...they need to undercut the Germans by 20-20% and the Japanese by 10+ percent.

Why, Toyota never required Scion to do so.
---------------------------------------------------
Definitely emulating the Scion model is the way to succeed.

My favorite crazy idea is the Buick Avenir concept. I think they should force Avenir dealers to have dedicated stores, and then they should call these stores "Pontiac", and maybe use the tagline "Avenir from Pontiac: The Cadillac of Cars".

Scions were usually, but not always, in dedicated dealers.

I thought that was the plan years ago but didn’t pan out. So they made the Genesis luxury sedan anyways, Hyundai top of the line I assumed. Then a Genesis coupe came along that was anything but luxury. I think they currently have couple sedans, G80 or G90 that are like $50-60k. Before the manufacturer wants a dealership to invest millions, they should figure out a plan first...

The plan was to launch Genesis as a brand with the first Genesis sedan, but when the economic downturn happened, Hyundai made the decision to market the Genesis as a Hyundai. Then Hyundai seemed to lose focus by putting out the Equus (not named as a Genesis) and the Kia K900 (perplexing move) that created confusion as to what Korean luxury-premium cars were. On one hand, Genesis is going in the right direction. On the other hand, why in hell is Kia doing another K900? The K900 and Equus were good cars, but patently stupid moves in marketing.

Look it is a good quality car and it clearly competes with the Euro marquee's and Lexus. Makes complete sense. Lexus does it, Audi does it, Acura does it, Infinity does it.

This isn't news. When Genesis became a brand, it was known internally that stand-alone dealers would be required once the G70 and crossovers arrived. That has always been the plan. It was not required initially because there was not a full line up to make a stand-alone dealer viable. Dealers simply have been reminded that the clock is ticking and that if they want to continue selling Genesis vehicle, they need to step up. Some dealers intend to get away with selling Genesis cars until the tap is turned off.

But with just one low volume sedan, how is the dealership expect to get by?

I do see a lot of overlapping models between hyundai & kia. With the exception of the Soul & Stinger, the rest of kia lineup is a blur to me. They should merge the two brands and then pick out a few to be a Genesis, like the Stinger and the G80/90/K900. “Lexus-fy” couple SUVs and do make that big SUV with the rear lounge seats. With proper advertising, i can see some future in 5-10 years.

The line up is 3 sedans (G90, G80, G70), two crossovers (GV Series), and a Coupe.
