Genesis Goes Gunning For Land Rover With New GV80 SUV
Hyundai luxury brand Genesis is using an extended Santa Fe mule to develop underpinnings for a premium SUV model that could rival the Range Rover Velar.

Spotted testing in the Arctic Circle, the mule is expected to form the basis of a production car that will be the first of two confirmed SUV models on their way by 2020.

It will be larger than the Hyundai Santa Fe, as evident by the cut-and-shut body of the test mule that gives it an extended wheelbase and stretched body, suggesting it will share much of its base with the G80 saloon. It is likely to be offered in two- and four-wheel drive forms and could get up to three rows of seating.

Until Genesis becomes a brand that people want to be seen in - it will remain a brand that people who cannot afford the real good stuff - get.

It took decades for Lexus to ALMOST rise to the real luxury level - rather than second tier - but even Lexus cannot compete with Land Rover today. Genesis probably has less possibility than TONKA does.

"Lexus cannot compete with Landrover"? lol, because they're not in the same segment. Their customer bases can't be anymore different. Landrover competes with Porsche, which they failed misery.

Will be interesting to see where Genesis steals design cues from for their first luxury SUV.

That shows tremendous promise that Genesis will finally get come compelling product. It's quite obvious that it's much more than a Santa Fe.

The Genesis SUV will be the breakaway vehicle for the Genesis lineup.

Watch out GLS450!

It will certainly double Genesis' sales at least.

Targeting Land Rover is a big mistake, because then they have to include all of the systems to make the vehicle off road capable and they don’t have the pricing power to pull that off. They should be targeting BMW, Audi and MB at prices 10% lower than Lexus/Acura/Infiniti with this first generation of vehicles. The execution needs to be flawless just the way the Japanese were with their first generation.

Why would the Genesis have to be flawless when Land Rover are so flawed with their persistent reliability issues? The Genesis is likely to have far better reliability, but still.

Well, it's not like they said Genesis is targeting the Range Rover or Ranger Rover Sport. They stated the Velar which starts at just under $50K, around the same price as a GLE and X5.

@mdarringer. They can’t compete with Land Rover...Land Rover has a brand image that allows them to command prices well over what even the Germans can. Part of this has to do with the inclusion of off road abilities at which point they would come in above Lexus/Acura in price. They Have to be flawless because they are establishing a new brand in a much more crowded market than when Lexus/Acura established themselves. Lexus got to their position in a short period of time because they executed those first 2 generations perfectly. The velar is the size/performance of the x3/glc/q5 and more competitive with those vehicles yet it is priced similar to a class higher.
