SPIED: New Porsche Boxster Spyder And Cayman GT4 Could Be The BEST Porsche's...Ever — NEW Detail CONFIRMED
The Porsche with a funny hat is coming back, folks. And, there's even better news where that came from.

Rather than get resurrected with a four-cylinder motor, Porsche has decided to do something really, really cool.

According to reports, the boys and girls from Stuttgart are going to drop in the 4.0-liter six-cylinder engine from the 911 GT3 into the upcoming Boxster Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4. I am pretty sure the heavens have opened up because I can hear the trumpets blasting right now.

Having had much wheel time with a first-gen Boxster Spyder and the lovely Cayman R, I can attest that these models are Porsches finest. You can drive them at 10/10ths everywhere and, boy, do those six-cylinders howl when you're on 'em.

If you were paying attention to the fanfare over the Cayman GT4's release, you'd note that the vehicle was incredibly difficult to obtain. Hell, even if you go look at used models now they're still fetching six figures.

Now if the refreshed variants are equipped with 4.0-liter engines from the exceptional GT3 I think that there's no question Porsche will be producing its best vehicle yet. No, not the 918. No, not the GT3 RS. The Boxster Spyder and 718 Cayman GT4 will be the ones to have.

What say you, Spies?

...The next Boxster Spyder, which will be heavily related to the 718 Cayman GT4, will use a 4.0-litre engine in place of the current hottest 718’s turbocharged 2.5-litre flat four...

...Output for the 4.0-litre unit is rated at 493bhp at 8250rpm in the 911 GT3, but the Boxster Spyder’s power may be slightly down on this in order to leave breathing space for its more expensive sibling.

The previous Spyder used a 3.8-litre flat six taken from the 911 Carrera of the time that was good for 370bhp. The recently launched Boxster GTS and related Cayman GTS use highly-strung four-pot engines with 361bhp, so the new Spyder will need to produce more power to cement itself as the top Boxster. An output of around 425bhp seems likely...

So essentially a modern 914-6.

My deposit is already in with my dealer for the new Spyder. If you want one or the GT4, better move fast. These (and the GT3) may be the last hurrah for N/A Porsches.

The Boxster Spyder is my all time favorite. I missed a chance to get one 5 years ago since there was only one available in my area with multiple bidders. I should rush to place a deposit. Thanks for the heads up.

Indeed, sir! @pcar4evr

Let us know if you secure an allocation. This is definitely going to be on my list of cars to acquire in several years...

@EVisNow: Make your move!

The first-gen Boxster Spyder was sublime. I didn't have a chance to get wheel time in the second-ten car but I can't imagine it not being a blast.

I can build you all a replica 914-6 that will be more entertaining. LOL

Matt - I have built V-8 Chevy Novas that will leave either of these cars still staging. However - people do not buy these cars for their performance - they buy them to be seen in - and a 914-6 is no longer something that would make a difference. The average person these buyers want to impress only know they are relatively new Porsches - and cannot tell one from another to begin with.

The days of the Sleeper are left for the Real Driving enthusiast - the person who does not care what his car "looks" like. But as these cars become faster - they also become museum pieces rather than real every day drivers. An allocation is the indication of that.

@fiftysix, you'll have to forgive @TomM. He wasn't "thinking clearly".

As for a 914-->914-6 conversion, it's surprisingly easy. The advantages are exclusivity (the Boxster is a Camry-common in some places), speed (a conversion is LIGHT compared to regular cars), more "real car" mechanical goodness, and handling. Porsche killed the 914-6 because it easily outdistanced a 911.

If a person could get a Cayman GT4, he would have a car that is much better than a 911.

from rumors, the 4.0 engine is completely new and not a detuned version of the gt3RS. i am tempted but will have to see real numbers first. I also wonder if the new Spyder will be more expensive than the gt4 following the switch from 718.

425 would be good number...as long as it doesn't get to 125K also

Of course it will be $125K. And for $125K, I wouldn't pay for Super Beetle sounds.

Probably the last year or 2 they will be offered with a N/A flat six. Since Porsche is going turbo with the GT3 they most likely would not keep producing N/A flat sixes. Further unless they are able to re-engineer the engine compartment future GT4's and Spyder's will only be available with the turbo flat four. Not the best sounding engine as we all know. But I also read that sales of the Boxster/Cayman have been tanking as of late. I'm guessing that there may be resistance to spending 85 to 90K on these cars with average options and only get a four cylinder engine. Again-No surprise here.
