The Explorer is OLD and is based on an even older Volvo. It really should be here by now. Typical Ford getting every last sale out of an old car before doing the new one.

the current Explorer isnt good anymore?

how old is the base model to date? 7 yrs old? considering all the changes & updates made, it's aged fairly well. there's a reason why GM/Ford/Chrysler tries hard not do so many full platform replacements during the 90s & early-00s. they didn't need to.

now a lot of the really good concepts have been used up already. too fast too soon for many of them. all those revolutionary ideas are old now. these automakers are basically running out of steam design-wise.

so now the SUV is the preferred vehicle type as alternative powertrain options get better developed.

The Explorer's platform is 20 years old. It debuted at the Volvo P2 and was then dumbed down for the D3 Ford 500/Freestyle and then it was given a minor change to become the D4 for the Flex/Taurus/Explorer.

With the New Chevy Blazer to be in this size range - and with the ability for Chevy to market it as the return of a "legend" - the Explorer has run its course in the current form - and BADLY needs a new version on a more compliant - far more modern Platform.

It also isn't Ford's first hybrid crossover.
