RUMOR: IF This Is TRUE, YOU Need To RUN Out And Get A 2018 Porsche 911 GT3...
IF this is true, boy, this is some seriously depressing news.

If you've ever experienced Porsche at its finest, there's no question the company's best engines are its naturally aspirated flat sixes. They're just so choice. When you're cruising at 60-80 mph with that howl filling the night-time air and you've got the windows down, you're living.

As of the latest 911's refresh, all of the motors have gone turbocharged. While the cars are greater than ever, I have to point out that when I did drive the 991.2 I did notice it sounded a bit more corked, or muffled. That certain something was just gone. Well, I said to myself, at least the GT3 hasn't lost its special something.

If rumors are to be believed though, start the death clock.

Reports have surfaced that the next-gen GT3 will get a forced induction motor via turbocharging. While power will surge to 550 horsepower, I am going to wager that the motor will not rev as high as the 2018 model year's 9,000 red line. And although I've been proven wrong before — Ferrari 488 GTB — I am going to wager that it's just not going to sound nearly as good as the current-gen product.

What say you, Spies? Is NOW the BEST time to go and snap up a Porsche 911 GT3?

Between the availability of a manual gearbox, the all-new Touring Package and the naturally aspirated motor, it seems to be all systems go from my end. You just need the means to do it.

...According to MOTOR’s European Editor, Georg Kacher, the next-generation 911 GT3 – part of the all-new ‘992’ lineup – will feature a turbocharged flat-six producing around 410kW fed through an eight-speed PDK gearbox.

This is a substantial increase over the 368kW produced by the current 991.2 GT3’s 4.0-litre flat-six and forced induction will increase torque by a far greater percentage. The 550Nm developed by the 911 GTS’s 3.0-litre twin-turbo flat-six is already well in excess of the current GT3’s 460Nm...

This is likely going to happen as it will be much better to share parts with the other 911 engines. But I am guessing Porsche will bring out "pure" motorsport-derived cars to please the faithful every now and then with their normally aspirated engines and 20th-century manual transmissions. However, Porsche will not make the same mistake twice and under price the next 911R or GT3RS. If you want Porsche purity.... you will need to pay double next time.

Porsche will just do a non-turbo that makes less power, but they will charge a 50% price premium.

Porsche still has to meet the emissions regulation for CO2 - which are actually much more strict than the USA. Smaller Engines with Turbochargers are the way to meet these requirements - and as a result the naturally aspirated engines are going to go away. Thankfully - with the introduction of the new ELECTRIC Pre-Turbo - which can eliminate the LAG of regular turbos - these engines can be really really nice.

I admit that I bought my CT6 with the regular V-6 on purpose - and still prefer non-turbo engines - but as with all things - as the years pass - the problems with the technology are solved to the point that turbo is where ICE engines are going until the Achates opposed cylinder engine is sorted out.

This has been discussed endlessly on Rennlist-check it out if interested. Won't do you much good running out to get a GT3. Dealer allocations are very scarce and usually go to repeat buyers. There are almost none available.

Just an aside, can someone tell me how primer "cement" colouring for a car became a thing? I am amazed every time I see a car done in this "shade".

The color is called Chalk and many like it. Isn't it great that there are so many color choices? If you don't like Chalk you have so many other options.

@momo - They can call it "chalk" if they want. But even though it has been decades since I was in a classroom, Chalk as I remember it was white, not grey or off-white. Other MFG's have even called this shade cement. But it will always be primer to me. BTW up here in the frozen north I am always happy to see a vehicle that is not black, silver or white, just not this shade.

Am also from the (very) frozen Canadian North. Agree with you on the black, silver and white comments, which is why I like the chalk (also known as Crayon in other countries). Very sharp in person! Again, colour is such a personal preference-for example a lot of the folks on Rennlist love signal yellow but I would never order that colour.

Marketing geniuses! First batch is not what you really want but most will get it anyways just because... Second batch comes along is exactly what you want, so instead of selling you a new GT3 every generation, they sell you two!

No surprise here really. Looks like the GT4 version of the Cayman and Boxster Spider will be the last Porsche sports cars to offer the N/A flat six. Most likely by 2019/2020 they too will only offer turbos. Unfortunately unless they re-engineer the engine compartment of give the replacements a longer wheelbase the Boxster/Cayman will be stuck with offering crappy sounding flat four even in the GT4 and Boxster Spyder. From what I've read the the GTS versions of those cars sound no better than the base or S cars.So if you really want a really nice sounding six cylinder engine in a mid engine sports car and can't afford a Ferrari etc. your choice has come down to just one. And of course its a bit of a leap of faith. It's the Lotus Evora 400 or 410 Sport. They both carry the tried and true Toyota Camry engine that is tuned and supercharged. In both cases they sound fantastic. The leap of faith is in the build quality and reliability. The engine should hold up at least. Further you can still get it in a manual transmission. If the car holds up it does have a better ride and on par handling with a Cayman.
