DRIVEN: Is The All-new Audi SQ5 The PERFECT Stand In For A Porsche Macan?

DRIVEN: Is The All-new Audi SQ5 The PERFECT Stand In For A Porsche Macan?
For folks that are in the market for a $50,000 or so sport-utility vehicle, they're in for a wake up call. That's because it's actually pretty tough price point to find something.

Why, you ask?

Well, it's sort of like this. You can get something from a non-luxury brand and get it loaded up to the gills. Or, you can go for a smaller luxury/performance-based SUV that may have less utility and options.

There's a lot of options but the trouble is narrowing down your short list. If you were wise though you'd do yourself some good and take the Audi SQ5 for a test spin.

While I would have liked a more spirited design, the reality is that the vehicle is very capable and priced competitively. If you want something with some performance but not going to cost you an arm and a leg — e.g., the Porsche Macan — the four rings is worth a look.

If you're in-market, you may do yourself some good by checking out what the good folks over at CAR magazine think of the Audi performance SUV. It recently published a brief review that may lend a hand if you're seeking something spunky for 50,000 clams.

P.S.: Fake exhaust design detail, Audi? Really?!

...If you want a performance car, you're best off with something like an RS3 or RS5, and if you’re after a car that can handle seven passengers and still give a fair amount of poke – you’ll need to get an SQ7. If, however, you want something somewhere in between, the SQ5 slots into the range perfectly.

It's spacious inside, and looks handsomely proportioned on the outside – but it feels far smaller to drive. Lower down to the ground and considerably more powerful than the outgoing SQ5, the 2018 model's ride is only a little on the firm side when in Comfort mode – even on 20-inch rims...

The GLC43 blows this out of the water. Imagine when the GLC63 get released.

Can it stand in for a Macan? It IS a Macan. Same car badge engineered.

That's a pretty silly comment. About 20% of the parts are shared.

Tell yourself that! Believe the truth tellers at VWAG.

@MDarringer: Someone who doesn't know what they're talking about might believe the Audi SQ5 and Porsche Macan are the same vehicles, just rebadged. That's pure, uninformed fiction.

Just visit the respective websites, or see them in person, or sit inside them, or spend some time driving them, and you'll quickly notice they're different vehicles.

@joneshamilton you seem to be a hater, what do you drive? By the way, the king of badge engineering is TM (they copied from VW)and BTW ALL car companies are moving into this model (sharing a platform), like it or not. TM has become the next GM.

SQ5 starts at $54k and I think you would be hard pressed to find one under $58k when you start to add some popular features.

Exactly, we couldn't find a Q5 prestige for less than $54K in the entire state and no SQ5 will go for less than $60K. That is why I purchased a MACAN for my wife.

Just as Lincoln cannot stand in for an S class Mercedes and never could - an Audi - even if it is the SAME car underneath- is simply not a Porsche.

Porsche is in a class that AUDI isn't. Porsche makes cars you want to be seen in - Audi makes higher priced - but really conservative styled - ho-hum Volkswagens.

The only real difference between the two is the Porsche's uglier styling. The Macan is pretty much just a Q5 with a Porsche emblem tacked on. If that is your definition of it being a Porsche, then bring on the VW Jetta Pioneer with a Porsche badge.

Funny @MDarringer, everyone loves my wife's SUV and she keeps getting complements everywhere she goes. Black with 20 inch wheels and red interior, I think it looks awesome. I wonder who is biased because Porsche is VWAG product and always have something negative to say about them? Hmmmm

@MDarringer this is why you are pushing FORD vehicles now? FORD consistently falls below VW on reliability ratings, just look at CR and every other car magazine out there. Sad but true.

Customers who purchase non-911 and non-Boxster Porsche's are idiots.

The non-Porsche versions of "badge-models" are oftentimes much better than the Porsche versions (Cayenne, Macan, etc.)

The SQ5 and Macan are the same once the badge is removed.

SQ5 is Buick LeSabre to Macan's Oldsmobile Delta 88. This 'badge-engineering' strategy will eventually catch up to and create big problems for VWGroup.

Well we are the customers that have save PORSCHE since the "non 911 and non Boxter Porches" don't sell as well. Especially the MACAN is selling the 911 3 to 1 worldwide. The PORSCHE naysayers need to stop crying and admit that the SUVs have saved the company .BTW most of us, will eventually end up purchasing a Boxter or 911, isn't that the strategy?
Ferrari , Lambo and everyone else are doing it.

This is an UK article in $50k pounds and in US, SQ5 you will find at dealership is more like $65k for the premium plus and $70k for the prestige. So I’d much rather take a Macan S for $70k.

If the car would have been for me, most definitely I would have considered the Trackhawk but it was for my wife and she doesn't care for Cherokees or any other domestic SUV.

The Porsche Macan is too small on the inside. The Q5 is a lot roomier inside.

@GermanNut: As much as I love the Macan, I agree with you. With the Macan, for substantially more money, you sacrifice interior volume and fuel economy to amp up the luxury and sportiness. It depends on what the customer values more.

I positively love the Macan, but I would not want less space than the Q5 I'm driving now.

Just by numbers, SQ5 isn't that impressive in it's category. So no to the Macan question.

This would be a great car...it it weren't hecho in Mexico. I don't know about anyone else, but I won't spend close to 60K for a car made in Mexico.
