Audi Banishes The Toll Tag - Integrates Into Infotainment System
Audi said it will begin integrating automated toll payment technology into its U.S. vehicles later this year that will allow drivers to pay tolls without the need for an additional device.

The integrated toll module is built into the vehicle's rearview mirror, which is supplied through Gentex Corp., and can be controlled through the vehicle's on-board infotainment system. Audi, in a statement Wednesday, said that the module is compatible with 98 percent of the toll infrastructure in the United States, as well as toll roads in parts of Canada and Mexico.

But can it be switched? Here we have what are called HOT lanes. You can travel in the HOV lane as a single occupant, but you need the ability to switch it to a different mode to indicate you are driving with enough passengers to meet the HOV requirement. You can't just switch it off, as it has to be readable in HOV mode as well.

Just read something on another site that clarifies that it has the proper functionality for carpool usage, accessible via an infotainment screen setting.

Whatever happened to license plate readers... Who needs tags anymore?

Doesn't work for lanes that only require payment under certain conditions. Washington state had license plate frames with the transponder attached, but those have gone away for the same reason, in addition to their vulnerability to theft.

I'm not so sure HOV lanes reduce congestion or pollution. The 405 still has a lot of cars stopped and idling.
