Genesis Schools The Class In Consumer Reports Annual Ranking Of Automotive Brands

Hyundai's new Genesis luxury brand supplanted Audi atop Consumer Reports' annual ranking of automotive brands released Thursday.

Audi, at No. 2, was followed by BMW, Lexus, and Porsche to complete the top 5. They were followed by Subaru and Kia -- the highest-ranked mass-market brands -- then Tesla, Honda and Toyota to round out the top 10.

The magazine's annual report card ranks brands based on road and safety tests, owner satisfaction and reliability.

Well, when you can't school the class in innovation, on the streets, in brand image, on a track, on the sales charts, you may as well beat them in Consumer Reports!!

lmao, you mean all 10 genesis owners were happy. This comes down to shear volume. All the other brands sale vastly more cars than genesis, so by default you will have more complaints.

It seems there are a lot of folks who don't want Genesis to be cast in a positive light.

In my opinion, Hyundai and Genesis are respectable vehicle, and worth a look. Hyundai especially delivers solid bang for the buck, respectable defect numbers, good support from the brand, and happy customers to back that up.

Would I go so far as to say they're "the best," or even "you should get one"? Hell no! But they are a noteworthy brand.

Genesis does not have massive sales, BUT they are taking care of customers big time.

The G90 is wonderful.

Consumer Reports should go back to what they do best. Namely, reviewing appliances and leaving car reviews to reputable car magazines.

You mean the "reputable" car magazines that never say anything wrong about a car because they are afraid of losing their bribes and their next press junket?

There is ample evidence that car magazines are on the take. Witness the fawning praise over the Giulia that launched with assembly flaws that dealers had to fix as well as nightmarish reliability. Did any of that get mentioned? Not really.

I'm not a fan of Consumer Reports, but they tend to be more accurate than the "reputable" car magazines.

No, I'm really pissed off that FCA is raping people out of money for a truly substandard car.

CRs collects the most in-depth data on vehicles and presents it in easy to read formats. Their presentation allows for reprioritization of individual preferences. The brand report is an interesting benchmark but does not substitute for their individual model comparisons. Their extended review time, and broadest range of models is unmatched.

No - Agent00R - one thing was left out

CR reviews cars as appliances for their intended tasks- and their review deliberately avoid things that an performance enthusiast would care about.

The problem with ALL of these "studies" is that they do not release the information on how they generate the data - what questions are asked and in what manner. Quite a few years back - Mitsubishi had a nice small sports car called the Eclipse - that was also available from Chrysler corporation Dodge - The cars were made in the same plant in the usa with the same content(Truly badge engineered) - but apparently the Chrysler branded product was far worse than the Mitsubishi. ANd that happens again and again - not just with CR = but with the others as well. AS a result - I would not make a decision based solely on their recommendations - since something is still causing a bias.

@TomM WRONG! CR publishes its methodology.

My preferences all land in the top 10 of this list. The 11 thru 20 to me are clear 2nd tier. The rest 3rd tier.

"The magazine said every Audi model tested, which totaled eight in the latest survey period, and every Genesis tested, just two models, are all recommended"
The odds are with Genesis to achieve a higher ranking since they only offer 2 models and under 1,700 buyers to survey.
