#GIMS: Volvo Drops The All-new V60 — Is Volvo's DESIGN Strategy Working For YOU?
This week Volvo revealed its all-new, mid-size sedan. Dubbed the 60-series, it has been around for quite some time now. Shown for the first time in wagon form, the V60 will appear at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

Clearly, Volvo knows its clientele if its showing the wagon before the sedan.

Volvo V60

Agent 001 and I are still scratching our heads wondering why Volvo even produces sedans and wagons when its SUVs are making up a significant portion of its sales. But, hey, what do we know?

Having said that, it's clear from all of Volvo's all-new vehicles that the company is essentially following the Germans lead with the philosophy "Same sausage, different length." But, is that such a bad thing in this case?

The all-new XC90, S90, XC60 and now V60 all have mature, confident lines that are clean. But, they all look very similar.

The all-new XC40, on the other hand, is sophisticated but has a bit of spunk in its design as it speaks to a younger demographic. It's different.

So, what say YOU, Spies? Is Volvo's approach working for YOU or are you becoming a bit bored?

Volvo's press release follows:

Volvo launches new V60 versatile family estate

Volvo Cars, the premium car maker, today revealed the new V60 five-door, mid-size premium estate, underlining the Swedish company’s position as a maker of cars that combine good looks with everyday practicality.

The car was launched in its natural habitat – the driveway of a family home in Stockholm – highlighting Volvo Cars’ pedigree in family estates and pinpointing how the V60’s versatile design caters to the diverse needs and realities of modern family life.

Few car makers can match Volvo Cars’ history and credibility in making well-designed, practical and versatile estate cars.

“The family estate driver is an important customer for our business and has been for generations,” said Håkan Samuelsson, president and CEO of Volvo Cars. “The new V60 honours that tradition, but also takes it much further.”

The new V60 shares Volvo Cars’ Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) platform with the award-winning new XC60 and four top-of-the-line 90 Series cars, which have been the collective force behind the company’s record-breaking global sales performance in recent years.

The SPA-based V60 introduces a new standard to the mid-size premium estate segment with a luxurious interior, increased levels of space, advanced connectivity, plus Volvo Cars’ latest driver support systems and other safety technology.

“The V60 really is the central point of the Volvo brand,” said Robin Page, Senior Vice President Design at Volvo Cars. “It’s refined, has a beautiful proportion and stance, yet delivers on practicality and versatility.”

In a first for the segment, customers can access the new V60 via Volvo Cars’ new premium subscription service Care by Volvo*, which offers car access via a monthly flat-fee subscription rather than ownership. Care by Volvo makes having a car as transparent, easy and hassle free as having a mobile phone.

Reflecting Volvo Cars’ industry-first announcement to electrify all new cars from 2019, the V60 comes with two plug-in hybrid powertrain options: the new T6 Twin Engine AWD petrol plug-in hybrid that generates a combined 340hp or the T8 Twin Engine AWD petrol plug-in hybrid that delivers 390hp.

The regular petrol choice offers T5 or T6 powertrains. Drivers who prefer diesel can select D3 or D4 engines.

The new V60 reinforces Volvo Cars’ standing as the industry leader in safety, with a comprehensive list of safety features that come as standard, including advanced driver support systems known from the 90 Series and XC60, making the new V60 one of the safest cars on the road.

The City Safety with Autobrake technology uses automatic braking and detection systems to assist the driver in avoiding potential collisions, and is the only system on the market to recognise pedestrians, cyclists and large animals. In a world first, City Safety now also engages autobraking to mitigate oncoming collisions.

The Pilot Assist system – which supports the driver with steering, acceleration and braking on well-marked roads up to 130km/h – has been upgraded with improved cornering performance. The V60 also includes Run-off Road Mitigation, Oncoming Lane Mitigation and other steering assistance systems. The optional Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake further improves safety for people inside and outside the car.

Volvo Cars’ Sensus infotainment system is fully compatible with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and 4G, and keeps drivers connected at all times. The system is control via an intuitive tablet-style touch screen that combines car functions, navigation, connected services and entertainment apps.

I have to admit that I've been pretty smitten with most of Volvo's recent designs. The XC90, XC60, V90 and now V60 are truly beautiful vehicles. The XC40 is a slight disappointment and the rear-end of the S90 is atrocious. In many ways, Volvo should be pushing Audi out of the way for those looking for stunning, conservative exterior designs, with modern, minimalist, high-quality interiors. However...and a big however...their powertrain offerings leave much to desire.

I completely agree. Design is working, but price point is not. Was looking at the XC90 last year, but the 4 cylinder turbo and supercharged was a deal breaker. Went with the Q7 and am very happy. The supercharged 3.0 is very smooth with lots of torque off the line.

Getting a hefty discount on a Volvo is easy.

Nailed it on both accounts: a) Volvos are looking great with the exception of the S90's rear, which at the same time is not terribly bad (hey, at least it looks different), but their engines are simply too small. b) Volvo is where Audi should have been in the styling department. Sadly, Ingoldstadt has decided to go the most boring route instead.

Absolutely. Volvo is making the best styled vehicles they ever have right now.

With the introduction of the new XC90, it is the first time I even looked at or noticed a Volvo. New designs are handsome and appealing. The exception is the pitiful XC40 with the cliche upsweep of the rear quarter window.

For me, the XC40 is the biggest success of the bunch. Volvos are just priced too high for a near-premium brand.

Works for me.
Is as much 850ish a design as you will get these days.

They’re all great looking with fantastic interiors my question is the powertrain, turbocharged and supercharged 4 cylinders. Give me a normally aspirated 6. I think these things will be costly fussy problems?

Volvo is not recognized on the street as a premium luxury brand - they are middle premium as Saab was, AUdi -Lexus - Infiniti - and Buick are as well. But Volvo (And Audi) are aspiring to a step above - and they are pricing themselves too high for their position.

Yes - the dealers DO heavily discount Volvo's - but who knows how many car buyers simply do not go to their dealers because of the pricing up front? Styling can sell a car - and probably does in Volvo's case - but Volvo also has the rare Station Wagon and a group of followers who continue to buy it.

I am looking forward to seeing if GM actually attempts to sell the Buick Station wagon - and if it does sell reasonably. NOTING it is made by PSA in their german factories - it is possible that Buick will not try to market it until they produce it here instead.

TomM you nailed it.

Because buyers do not see Volvo as premium, the premium pricing keeps them at bay.

A better move for Geely would have been to target the Subaru/Acura/Buick slice of the market.

If I'm paying Mercedes prices, I'm getting a Mercedes.

As for the Regal wagon, the CrossTourXTourCross or whatever idiot name they've fashioned for it, the car will flop. The new Regal is creating no buzz. The Lacrosse just produced zzz.

TomM: Just as a data point, I've owned 4 BMWs across 18 years. I've loved them all! I'm on my first Audi: A Q5 3.0L diesel. Its fit and finish, handling, and other measures of quality are certainly not less than my 4 previous BMWs, so I can't agree with you that Audi is not a luxury brand, or that it's not on par with BMW. Readily available defect numbers support what I'm saying.

I'm closing in on 3 years of ownership and over 37,000 miles without a single squawk. I'll keep you posted if I change my opinion on this matter!
