Was Ford's BIG Bet On Aluminum NOT A Good One? NYTimes Weighs In...
Three years ago, Ford Motor made a daring gamble when it started selling a new version of its F-150 pickup truck made mainly of aluminum rather than steel.

No carmaker had ever committed to using aluminum so widely in such a high-volume, high-profile vehicle. But the
new F-150 proved to be a technological marvel — 700 pounds lighter than the truck’s previous version, able to pull heavy loads with a V6 engine rather than a gas-guzzling V8.

Ford expected aluminum to give its truck a critical advantage in an era of tougher fuel-economy standards and rising gasoline prices. The company also thought the truck would pull customers away from General Motors and Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, and command prices high enough to increase Ford’s profit, despite aluminum’s higher cost.

But the revolutionary switch seems to be giving Ford less of an edge than it had hoped...

You can imagine how mad MFG's are with this new tariff on steel and aluminum. The USA imports these materials from over 100 nations. This will not still well with the big 3 or white good mfg's. Scandals in the WH, Foreign policy threats and now this ham-fisted unnecessary policy move. GOP rank and file are now angry. Likely getting calls from big corporate donors they represent. You can believe Trump will have a 2nd term if you like, smart money says not a chance.

@xjug - The drop in the stock market was not enough for you to see this was a stupid idea? Do you not think other countries will retaliate with tariffs of their own? Crack a book before you post nonsense and insults.

@xjug1987a Why should we even listen to him? He isn't an American and yet he thinks he has a right to be heard on things American. It's just his faux arrogance talking. We mustn't mention the Canadian inferiority complex.

Isn't it hilarious how easy it is to trigger the Alt-Left who don't know know to think clearly and who see things that aren't there?

Isn't it also funny that they do not have the presence of mind NOT to comment on beings they find to be "lesser than"?

Psychologically speaking, this ilk that barks incessantly like a rabid mongrel conveys more their own insecurities, inadequacies, inferiority complex, and consequently their need to be overcompensatory.

Even medication cannot cure that.

@MD - If you make comments about Trudeau being the son of a motherless hippie pot head, but feel insulted if I state the obvious on occasion to make a point about the facts at hand regarding an important proposal being floated by the WH, are you not being hypocritical? Argumentative? Pot calling the Kettle black?

And as far as a poster telling another poster to STFU, there is plenty of room on the bench where @BobM is eating lunch now. The Agents are watching and listening..... Be nice-Post with politeness.

@MDarringer: When you say others are triggered, you remind me on an ill-behaved toddler, screaming in isle 6, “I NOT MAD! I WANT MY COCO PUFFS!”

Your paranoid fear of anyone who isn’t Alt.Right follows you in your posts. You see Canadians as communists. You see anyone who disagrees with you (a Nazi Alt.Right-er) as “Alt.Left.” AutoSpies readers (except for other Alt.Right-ers) can easily see you’re constantly flying off the handle, unhinged, triggered by anyone who thinks differently than you. That’s an MDarringer signature move. Always a rant. Always hating. Always jabbing. Always accusing others of his own shortcomings.

It’s humorous, really. I just find myself rolling my eyes when I see you posts. It’s like watching someone with the worst case of “poker face” trying to bluff that they have a strong hand :-)

Unfortunately - the ability for the President of the USA to impose Tariffs is a murky combination of laws.
The constitution gives congress the right to impose and collect taxes and tariffs BUT
THe Trade act of 1974 give the President the ability to set a TEMPORARY tariff - limited to a top of 15% and for no more than 150 days
The trade act of 1962 gives the president the ability to set tariffs on certain industries - without limit - so he could use this to set more targeted tariffs
He also has the ability to set tariffs during WAR - which would require a declaration of War that he will not get - AND he has the ability to set tariffs during a time of National Emergency - which he can declare.

Since the laws specifically state that Congress has the right to COLLECT tariffs - supposedly congress could simply refuse to collect more than an amount they set. This would set up a constitutional crisis - and of course - as laws made by congress - those two trade acts could be modified by Congress - but that would need Trumps signature - or enough votes for an override (THey might be able to do that though in this case - but it would take TIME)

So - at the very least - the President could upset the world for 150 days (At 15%) before congress would have to get on board - which they would not - both parties are against this.

The key variable factor was that since the introduction of the aluminum F150 in 2015, the U.S. has experience extreme low fuel prices. That has neutralized the main MPG advantage of the lighter weight aluminum truck.

Now in 2018, oil prices have dramatically increased. WTI today was almost $64 a barrel (in 2016, WTI oil price was about $26!).

With regular pump gas prices now about $3 a gallon, many truck buyers with think seriously about the MPG advantages of the lighter aluminum Ford F150 and now also the larger Super Duty aluminum truck.

The problem is - the Aluminum - which is more expensive - and more expensive to fix - did not give Ford a huge difference in weight. For Years - GM pick ups were lighter than Ford - and the Aluminum in Ford did not make them that much lighter than Chevy - so the difference in MPG is not that great. Certainly Ford cannot brag on how strong its bed is. And I still say - Turbo engines have more to go wrong than non-turbo ones.

Now that Chevy has new trucks - that are even lighter than Ford using less Aluminum - and still have Steel Beds - the war will be on. But - it is the new GM engines that will be coming out over the next three years that will attenuate the difference.

As far as the proclaimed Tariff policy - this is just another example of something that was brought up by Trump that will simply be allowed to die on the vine. Pay little attention to what Trump says - pay more attention to what he ultimately does. He said he was going to bring the best people to his administration- so far - with so many unfilled positions - the one who have come have turned out to be not even the best crooks.

Back to the article, what is missed is the early concern of body/chassis repair costs and associated insurance cost. Longer term is the longevity, given the history of poor corrosion prevention on steel pickup trucks (Ford, GM, Ram), is how aluminum will hold up long term. A big risk for Ford is prevention of galvanic corrosion, if a problem shows up, the cost could sink the company.

Alt Leftard and AS resident trollster -TheSteve is a Canadian transplant as he knows too much about Ontario not to be from here or has no life & lives on Autospies and studies Canadianism from his safe space. This would explain his anti-Trump hatred and elitist Liberlaism superiority complex issues.

Trump is right to impose tarriffs on Aluminum and steel as Brazil, China and many other Shithole countries do dump steel on our shores and screw our domestic producers. My customer base is the Steel mills and big end users of these commodities and I know the industry well.

The tariffs wont work against Canada as we are the biggest exporter of Aluminum to the US and have a big trade deficit of steel with the US. The Donald knows this and this is Trump doing what Trump does best and that is to negotiate the best damn deal for Murica and play hardball. In the end Canada will be exempt but not after our idiot Prime Minister Mohamed Trudeau makes a fool of himself, takes lots of selfies, tells the world how racist Canadians are, gives Billions away to more shitholes, proclaims his hate for white people and gives ultra delusional fanboy TheSteve another erection.

My local body shop charges $189/hour for aluminum work and only $120/hour for regular body work. How does insurance coverage fit in to the equation? More expensive to insure due to collision costs? Any Insurance spies here care to chime in?

@QEW with NAFTA in place these tariffs should not apply to Canada or Mexico, but I don't see the present administration feeling beholden by these rules. Important to know the idea for these tariffs is a proposal at the moment. I am not sure if an executive order from Trump could bring them into being or if the US Congress / Senate has a say. Maybe @TomM knows as he has circulated with the political class in Washington.

Hmmm, what the Alt.Right-ers (e.g, qwertyfla1 & MDarringer) lack in facts and reason, they more than make up for in the way of denial, deflection, derision.

Remember, that across the globe, the only people who continue to worship at The Church of Trump, are those under the Alt.Right umbrella: White supremacists, Neo Nazis, Anti-Semites, Islamophobes and other racists, anti-LGBTQ folks, militant extremist Conservatives, etc. This is the Face of Hate, and we acknowledge local representatives, qwertyfla1 and MDarringer (and a handful of others here at AutoSpies).

Re: “anti-Trump hatred”

It appears that the good people of America, who voted for Trump in the hope that he would be the face of positive change for them, have come to understand that they’ve been duped by the con that is the man, and by the crumbling regime that continues to support him directly, or continues to be complicit during his reign.

I look forward to the Mueller investigation continuing to unfold, the noose continuing to tighten, criminal charges continuing to be filed against the guilty (yeah, they plead guilty, so no need to prove their guilt in a trial), more Whitehouse chaos and resignations, and of course, the fall elections! That’s when we will see if the American People have regained their senses sufficiently to oust the complicit from the Right side of the aisle.

We live in interesting times.

Coles Notes for the reading-impaired:
1) Alt.Right-ers, like Nazis, are hateful, angry people.
2) People who opposed Nazis, and say “you’re a Nazi” are not Nazis!
3) Opposing hate, is NOT the same thing as being on the side of hate!

I now return you to the hateful tirades of MDarringer and qwertyfla1, already in progress.
