Trump's Trade War Escalates To The Europeans - Are We All Going To Be Driving Vehicles Built By The Detroit 3?

President Trump on Saturday threatened to hammer European automotive companies with steep tariffs as his global trade war snowballed into a third day.

Trump, in a series of Twitter posts while at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, appeared to be responding to warnings from European leaders that his promised tariffs on aluminum and steel would trigger retaliation from numerous major U.S. trading partners.

Bring it on, Trump wrote.

Just as Canada and Mexico benefit at the expense of the USA, so does Europe. With the EU in such precarious economic standing, they will make concessions quickly.

Matt

How exactly do you think Canada has an advantage on the US? Both countries benefit and trade balances itself over time as some years you have a small trade deficit or surplus. One could argue the US gets the most benefit by far as our biggest exports are raw goods like timber, oil, electricity, minerals etc while we buy mainly finished goods from the US.

Trump is a master negotiator and he is playing hardball even with its biggest trade partner -Canada to get a better deal for the US. Some of his demands are unrealistic and will be overturned but Negotiating 101 you always ask for more than you want or need so good on Trump for trying to MAGA.

Trump knows our asshole PC Prime Minister is an absolute idiot and is taking advantage for America's benefit and this is what good government is suppose to do (take care of its own and not all the welfare shitholes). I wish we had a someone like Trump but sadly our leadership is pathetic and Canada is fucked.

Germany exports $118B worth of goods (manufactured products predominately) into the USA, not because they are cheaper than the USA made goods (far from it), it is because they are better and more desirable to businesses and consumers alike.

Slapping a tariff on these goods or other materials will not change how US firms or the US economy performs relative to its competitors. This threat of tariff war with every US trading partner is really designed to distract people from the chaos in the WH and the pending report from the Special Counsel. The timing of it is very telling. Give it some thought.

Trump knows nothing will become of these trade tactics - if they actually get imposed is another question. If they do the US will have to back down at some point. It won't help the NAFTA talks either. There is a dispute settlement mechanism in the agreement for a reason, this particular case makes the point clear why it is there. But when the dust settles, Trump can go back to the base in the rust belt and say "I tried" and I am still stuck with a "rigged system". Vote for me again in 2020. Don't be fooled.

For those who like facts and data. This is where the steel that is imported into the USA comes from. China is a minor inconsequential player/scapegoat in the US steel market. Data is from Reuters News.

And to @QEW's point, the total trade the USA has with Canada is nearly 100% reciprocal (goods and power/energy). There is nothing to complain about. And yes we do buy more finished goods from the USA. So if there has to be a winner, it would be the USA as finishing goods means more jobs are created.

Following are the top steel exporters to the United States with their corresponding percentage of total U.S. steel imports:

1. Canada 16.7 percent

2. Brazil 13.2 percent

3. South Korea 9.7 percent

4. Mexico 9.4 percent

5. Russia 8.1 percent

6. Turkey 5.6 percent

7. Japan 4.9 percent

8. Germany 3.7 percent

9. Taiwan 3.2 percent

10. China 2.9 percent

11. India 2.4 percent

To add to this list, here are the top 3 global markets for steel exported from the USA. Note it is highly concentrated and likely directly linked to the auto industry. So as you can see, putting tariffs on products that are used in a highly integrated global trading group (NAFTA) and are part of a highly complex continental supply chain (autos), makes very little sense.

Canada 50%
Mexico 39%
Italy 1%
ROW 10%

Very true TheSteve. What you said is spot on. I just don't have the time to be logging in here often and it is the case for most folks, so it is just the same circlejerk of idiots that are present (have no lives).

The bigoted hick-n-hack and shame of Texas in Agent009 having a job on this site, just continues to speak of how low the bar runs for Autolies.

They have never topped the W221 S-Class consumer clinic leak of December 2002 and just post regurgitated news, with useless opinionated takes and blogbot spam. Like Left Lane News, it has just become a cesspit that showcases the negatives of American Right Wing (none of the "select" positives).

I do not come here to read political news about Clinton, Trump, and etc, so I do not see why the Agent009 thinks anyone with sense wants to entertain his political stances in pieces about automobiles.

Any of you with sense, would jump this sinking ship ASAP and go to a better site, that is quick with reporting thoroughly automotives without a National Enquirer (00R) or Breitbart (009) take on it. As for the rest of you trash, thumb me down.

Most of the high volume German Vehicles are already made in the USA/Mexico. After 3 series production moves to Mexico well more than half of German Vehicles sold here will not be subject to Tariffs...wont really hurt them much. All this will do is shift sales between the models as the NA made models will be a lot cheaper. BMW will be the big winner because all their SUVs and the new 3 series will be exempt from the Tariffs.

While the rest of the world works towards more open trade with fewer impediments, the US, with its "Me First" regime, heads in the opposite direction to erect trade barriers and tariffs.

While the rest of the world works towards reducing pollution, and tries to slow the catastrophic effects of global climate change, the US government extols the virtues of "clean" coal, and doubles down on fossil fuels, and dismantles the Environmental Protection Agency because these moves are "good for business."

I look forward to America's return to sanity once Trumpism, in all its forms, is behind us.

If you want to pay more for energy, be my guest. I would rather pay less. The EPA is a bunch of power hungry big ego assholes.

AND yet - Oil prices have increased almost 30% (Or more in some areas) since Trump took office - so the small tax cut most middle class people got is already spoken for.

THere is no longer any argument that the earth has warmed and the seas have risen - the only argument is to WHY that has happened. BUt if you travel a lot - around the world - the effect of pollution on air quality cannot be denied - there are places where they actually close down factories when the air gets too polluted to breathe. And while we in the USA have a head start over many of those countries in controlling pollution, there are still many bad areas in the USA where some people cannot breathe properly.

The EPA is simply another example of something we actually need. Or - by now everyone would be moving away from the bid cities.

@ricks0me: Everyone has their priorities. I’d prefer to pay more for energy, if I knew my extra payments were being used to help us reduce pollution, live more sustainably, and not just line the pockets of the already rich Aristocracy more deeply.

I’d gladly pay more in taxes if it meant that all Americans could get world-class healthcare, rather than millions being without, and having a class-system based on who can afford “decent.” Ditto with world-class education, policing, etc.

I know that my priorities and interests are unpopular amongst the Alt.Right, whose attitude is “I’m doin’ fine, so FU and STFU!”… and even amongst non-extremist, non-radicalized Conservatives. Caring for *all* Americans (and not just big business) is “un-American” in the minds of The Right.

Those are just some of the things that are important to me. Everyone gets to choose their own priorities.

And no, I’m not rich.

[So, will the Alt.Right chime in with denial, deflection, derision, and nit-picking? This post is just too tempting a bait, isn’t it?]

Looks like Europe is doing quite well, even with all their socialist BS. Nov 2017 - (Reuters) - The euro zone’s annual economic growth rate outstripped that of the United States in the third quarter setting up 2017 as the best year for the currency area since financial markets crashed a decade ago. Eurostat, the European Union statistics office, confirmed a preliminary estimate that euro zone gross domestic product (GDP)grew 0.6 percent from July to September from the previous quarter and on a year on year basis was 2.5 percent higher. This was higher than the 2.3 percent year-on-year rate for the U.S. economy. “A robust labor market recovery, growing export markets, an accommodative monetary stance, improving lending conditions and modest inflation are but a few of the tailwinds that the euro zone economy is experiencing,” ING economist Bert Colijn said. “Because of that, this could well be its strongest year for growth since 2007. The euro zone will likely outpace both the U.S. and UK in terms of GDP growth in 2017,” he said.

@xjug1987a: The folks in the Alt.Right see the world in a similar way as the "aliens on the moon" conspiracy theorists:

- Ignorance of everything outside their own microcosm, including science.

- Fear of "aliens" (illegal, or foreigners in general).

- Belief that our problems are caused by alien forces, and conspiracies against us.

- Belief that only "Believers" hold The Truth.

- Belief that even non-Believer Americans are "the enemy".

- Paranoid, hysterical fear of imagined conspiracies: "Alt.Left," the Demon conjured up by the Alt.Right, which literally means "Opposite To Us" or equivalent to the Antichrist; Marxists, Communists, Liberal takeovers, etc.

- Response to criticism with anger, hate, and derision, rather than facts and a calm, level head.

- Impervious to facts and reason. They still embrace their beliefs, no matter what!

So Alt.Right-ers, do you allege that @valhallakey isn't a Real American™ because he said something that present foreign countries in a positive light, and Alt.Right-ers in a not-so-positive one? Is he part of the Lizard People's conspiracy to take over the world? ;-)

Reminders:

1) “Alt-Left” is a terms coined by the Alt.Right (Nazis, White supremacists, anti-LGBTQ etc.) to mean “Not one of us”. Nobody self-identifies as “Alt Left”, though people DO self-identify as being Alt.Right.

2) MDarringer gives us another demo of his paranoid “they’re out to get us” delusions, in which a Communist lurks behind every lamp post. In this case, it’s: Anyone who isn’t Alt.Right is bent on destroying the economy; only the Alt.Right are the Saviors and Defenders of The Economy; Nobody else can do it!

And this noise happens after his party of favor recently added $1.5 Trillion to the National Debt in the last budget… more, and quicker, than any other previous administration. There’s Alt.Right “logic” for you :-/
