#GIMS: CAR WARS! WHICH SUV Would You Take And WHY? BMW X2 vs Lexus UX
We've been telling you incessantly. The compact sport-utility vehicle space is a boom right now.
And it's not just the luxury players getting in on the act. Even mainstream auto manufacturers are playing in this space. The reality is that buyers are dumping traditional sedans for edgier and roomier SUVs.
2018 Geneva Motor Show (GIMS)
Two of the latest examples are the all-new BMW X2 and just revealed Lexus UX. Both are relatively small, feature edgy designs and are likely to attract a younger demographic to each brand.
What's there NOT to like?
I reckon probably a good amount. But we're not here to quibble about those items — yet. We're far more intrigued by what the AutoSpies community has to say about both of these SUVs. Which all-new SUV is your flavor?
The BMW X2 or Lexus UX?

BMW hands down. Would wait for a higher output version though. I am certain the driving experience would be better and I can't take the origami styling of the Lexus.

BMW. The Lex is just way too ugly.

The "COW CATCHER" grille would make this an ideal car for INDIA - if they could afford it. However - it is still too radical for a near premium car.

No, get one of those bicycles--oops cycles--and wear the douchy spandex shorts with the crotch enhancement to give what God denied and then brag about how far you ride.

I'd go Lexus.
The X2 does nothing for me. UX at least has some verve and its interior looks more inviting, IMHO.

I do agree that the interior looks more inviting than the X2. And at least it's new for the brand, where the X2's interior looks like the same rehashed BMW interiors.

The Lexus will have the price advantage and the BMW will have the power advantage.
Lexus comes with 168hp. Not sure on price, but will be below NX which starts at $36K
BMW comes with 228hp and starts at $36K.

The Lexus by a notch. BMW loses in fit & finish (and possibly reliability).
Look closely at the picture of the Bimmer’s small storage compartment left of the steering.

Lexus said UX will be available December 2018, not sure why it takes that long. Shouldn't them jump in the bandwagon ASAP to cash this in?
On the other hand, BMW in Dallas area invited me to test drive the X2 this weekend and get $1000 on any new BMW vehicles.

If I recall, the UX is being developed under the 561A codename. The 561A project was on-stream by 2013, but production development began by early 2016, plus design freeze being completed that year.
That aspect holds a car back from launch, until development satisfies the needed lead time to engineer it for production. Usually that is about 2 years on average, for more complex or "fancier vehicles, 3 years. I am not sure if the GA-C already being introduced as TNGA-C for the Prius in December 2015, has allowed Lexus to work with less lead time on this car.
Shockingly, Toyota took 6 years to develop the current generation Prius and over 3 years to engineer it prior to December 2015. The prior generation Prius took about 48 months to plan & develop and 24 months to engineer.
The new Lexus LS took 6 years to develop under project 200B, nearly 4 years to engineer from design approval before entering production in December 2017. The UX Concept was developed in 2015-16 as Toyota was locking in the dimensions of the production car.
What a lot of people forget is, TNGA is not one sole application. There is TNGA-C, TNGA-K, and TNGA-L so far, with TNGA-F coming next year and TNGA-B. The Prius debuted the "C" application for compact FWD in Dec 2015, Z100 LC 500 for GA-L (TNGA-L for Crown, non-Lexus), XV70 Camry for mid-large FWD "K" in July 2017, and next generation Land Cruiser will be for TNGA-F Q4 2019-Q1 2020.
Lexus models don't include TN, being instead GA-L, GA-K (240B project 2019 Lexus ES [XV80]), and GA-C (2019 UX).

What I forgot to mention regarding the 4th generation Prius, is that the all-new TNGA architecture, is what required so much lead time to develop, that the final design commitments were being made around November 2012, 3 years prior to launch in December 2015.
I think for every Toyota model that debuts an new iteration of TNGA/GA architecture, will have long engineering lead times. In the case of being the first version and not piggy-backing off of another model introducing it beforehand.
It has been lazily assumed by select automotive media, that the Prius and new Camry use the same platform. That is a bunch of BS, resulting from lazy research or blissful ignorance.

Just saw the X2 in the dealership this morning. It is not attractive from the front. And the interior feels claustrophic, uncomfortably so. The window sills and cowl are too high. the upsweep of the rear window line makes heightens that feeling of claustrophia and feels like it creates an uncomfortable blind spot. The X1 definitely had better aesthetic appeal and felt more airy.
