RUMOR: It's Coming! Mercedes-Maybach GLS-Class Is STILL On Its Way — FIRST Look By End Of 2018
Originally noted over a year ago was news that Mercedes-Benz's Maybach division would expand. That didn't come as a huge surprised but what did was the next model in line to get the Maybach treatment.

It would be the GLS-Class, full-size sport-utility vehicle.

Although the current crop of luxury SUVs seem to have a mixed bag of results, there's no question that vehicles like the top of the line Land Rover Range Rover sells like there's no tomorrow. With the Bentley Bentayga out and about, and an all-new Rolls-Royce SUV on the way in form of the Cullinan, you had to know that Maybach wouldn't sit on the sidelines.

According to the latest report from Autocar, the SUV will debut by the end of 2018 at the Los Angeles Auto Show (LAAS). As of now, details remain rather speculative.

We're going to assume it will follow the formula established by the Maybach S-Class: Offer a couple motors, a bunch of super high-end options, a well-equipped/well-trimmed interior and then price it well below the competitors.

All that said, does this potential Maybach move the needle for you? Or, is it too little, too late?

...The new Maybach SUV will share the same basic aluminium and steel bodyshell and advanced four-wheel- drive underpinnings as less heavily specified versions of the new GLS. However, Autocar has been told its upmarket positioning will be underlined by a series of subtle exterior design tweaks and a significantly more luxurious interior than standard versions of the US-built SUV.

Insiders involved in the development of the Mercedes-Maybach concept car, known internally as the Maybach 9, say it will not only preview the look of the new model, with a bold new grille among the elements aiming to provide it with added exclusivity, but will also highlight the sort of upmarket features, including autonomous driving functions, to be offered on the production version of the SUV...

Well, this is a no-brainer and I'm surprised it hasn't already been done and introduced. Granted, it would make more sense to introduce it with a new GLS, but not sure when that is supposed to happen. The new GLE has already been testing so not sure if a new GLS is to follow?

As the ALT -Right avers - the earth is not warming - it is actually getting colder - and since the snow and ice covering is spreading further South every year - as the levels of the oceans subside and the poles get larger and larger - eventually it will be possible to DRIVE to the both poles as the SOUTH Pole expands to meet the southern tip of South America. And what better way to do that than in a mega-expensive 4 wheel drive Crossover!

"Maybach" is a trim level NOT a division.

How difficult is it to slap on some chrome rims, perhaps a V12, quilted leather and more wood veneer into a GLS? I'm surprised it took this long. I think the "new" GLS is coming out Winter 2019 for 2020 model year, which is away's in the future.

Might as well do a Maybach GLS "proof of concept" with the existing model and then give those folks who sign-up an upgrade path when the new one is launched in 2 1/2 years.

It will launch with the Maybach's new vertical grille, which appears to me will conincide with a re-launch of the Maybach sub-brand (or trim level depending on your point of view).

Anyone have thoughts on the new vertical grille?

The vertical grille makes it look like a Lincoln Town Car. It's terrible. Maybach is NOT a respected name. It's best known as Hitler's parade car of choice.

Maybach works much better as a trim level than a stand alone brand. Now the tech and underpinnings will be current and let the craftsmanship that Maybach represent shine.

AMG will be their performance while Maybach will be their ultra luxury line. Both are basically selling 50-100k premiums over their pedestrian models.
