Audi Profits Skyrocket 68% As Deiselgate Fades Away

Following the announcement that it will build a new Tesla Model S rival called the e-tron GT, the premium car maker confirmed that it sold 1,878,105 Audi vehicles last year, with profit before tax leaping by 57% to €4.7bn (£4.15bn). After-tax profits were up 68.4% to 3.4bn (£3.07bn).

The size of Audi’s business has doubled since 2009, with revenue in 2017 hitting 60bn (£53bn). Although Audi’s headline profit margin for 2017 was 8.4% - in the brand’s target ‘corridor’ of 8-10% - the costs of diesel engine recall in the US and the Takata airbag recall pushed the final figure back down to 7.8%.

Great vehicles and loyal buyers. They have a bright future ahead of them. Of course they are not for everyone, but they are clearly winning over more and more.

I'm approaching 3 years and 28,000 miles on my first Audi (a Q5 mid-size SUV). I still love it! Not a single quawk. I don't care for any of Audi's current models, due to styling and trim level packaging, wich bundle a lot of stuff I don't want (i.e., higher price for stuff I don't like). So I if I had to buy a new vehicle today, I'd be exploring other brands' offerings.

Trust me, no one cares about your Audi.

@MDarringer: When you say "trust me," I receive that in the same when when the prez says "trust me" ;-) Good thing you speak for everybody (yeah... that's sarcasm :-)

@MDarringer: Remember when you said on AutoSpies that you’re not a hypocrite?

I hereby shine the spotlight on you (again), and call you out for being a liar. You routinely deride people, jabbing and insulting wherever you go. Bullying is an MDarringer signature move (as it is with a *small* number of other radicalized fundamentalists here on AutoSpies).

You accusing another of being a “bully” is like a jackbooted Nazi Stormtrooper crying “people are mean to me.”

You demonstrate hypocrisy, at its finest, loudest, and clearest!

Look up the word "hypocrite"

OK, I'll do it for you. A hypocrite is guilty of hypocrisy which is: "the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense."

Thus, (1) you do not know the definition of hypocrisy and (2) saying that I "routinely deride people, jabbing and insulting" has got nothing to do with hypocrisy.

@MDarringer: I owe you and apology. I was in error for calling you a hypocrite. Indeed, I do not recall you denying that you:
- Bully people
- Denigrate others
- State mistruths (AKA willfully tell lies)
- Are disingenuous

A hypocrite, you are not. When you falsely accuse others of hypocrisy, that is not you being hypocritical. It’s just you lying, and attacking people, as you often do, but it is NOT hypocrisy on your part.

I stand corrected on this matter. Once again, I apologize to you, and I thank you for *correctly* pointing out my error on this occasion.

@fiftysix: No, it's not. It's the 2nd Generation 3.0L V6 Diesel, with DPF and DEF. The engine you're thinking about is the 2.0L (and smaller) I4 diesels, without DPF and DEF. There were never available in North American Q5s.

@fiftysix: I see you haven't done a bit of homework on this matter. That's common amongst Alt.Right-ers, such as yourself.

My sister in Law bought the last AUDI we will see in MY family.
In its three years - she had possession of the car out of the service department for 5 months.

While my Q5 was a 2012, and I acknowledge that it isn't representative of current models, it was more the dealer and AoA experience that kept me from buying a new one. At 80,000 miles, I was burning a quart of oil every 400 miles, and AoA was non-committal about fixing it. Went round and round with them. finally agreed to an oil consumption test. Dealing with the service department had my wife calling me and saying we were buying a new car, and it wouldn't be an Audi. We didn't even complete the test, but traded it in before it could even burn the next quart.

Perhaps the new models had a better infotainment system, but mine drove me nuts with the multiple steps necessary to change stations or adjust settings. German tech that was complicated for its own sake. And I've been a strong VW customer for many years. Now I'm in a Subaru, because my VW dealer who sold me the Audi also sells Subes.

@atc98092: I bet you're talking about 2.0L gasoline engine, right? Yeah, it has a history of burning oil, and Audi saying "that's normal." The Audi owners' forums have lots of that there :-( It was a big reason I chose the 3.0L diesel engine over the 2.0 L gas one.

My understanding is that not all 2.0L gas engines are beset with this oil drinking problem, but that the numbers are sufficiently high to cause customers to be upset, and for many people (except Audi) to see this as a problem :-(

Sorry to hear about your plight. I would have done the same in your shoes.

This is not surprising given Audi has increased its U.S. sales month-over-month for more than 7 consecutive years. Add to that strong growth once again in the Chinese market and it makes sense that Audi's revenue and profitability will soar.

If my sources are correct, that gives:

Audi 4.7bn Euro profit 2017 before tax
Benz 9.2bn Euro profit 2017 before tax
BMW to be released 3/21/18
