Nissan Claims New Leaf SUV Will Be The First Mainstream EV On The Market

Nissan’s upcoming pure-electric crossover will be the breakthrough model that makes battery-electric vehicles truly mainstream, according to Nissan Design Europe boss Mamoru Aoki.

Speaking at Nissan’s design centre in London, Aoki told Autocar: “Of course, we have the new Leaf (pictured below), but I think the [production version of the] IMx concept will become a breakthrough model.”

The IMx concept made its debut at the Tokyo show last October, promising a 380-mile range on a single charge and a dual-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain with a proposed 429bhp and 516lb ft of torque. Nissan also says the next generation of its autonomous ProPilot technology will be featured on the IMx.

Nissan, please don't compete with Lexus and Toyota for Ugliest Vehicle. You can aim for other top spots.

Judging on the Leaf's success, Nissan stands a good chance of doing well in the EV SUV segment.

Again - nothing is certain UNLESS they indicate what the selling price will be. Remember - by the time it comes to market - the Federal Tax deduction will likely have been exhausted by Nissan. Add in the specifications - which based on the POWER alone - is not entry level - and we are talking about a $60,000 and up vehicle here at least(Assuming pricing includes profit) - certainly is NOT going to be the Mainstream Vehicle that will make EVS stand.

ANd I still believe that it will take an EV that actually looks like a well designed car - rather than an escapee from Lego Land - to bring these cars to the mainstream. GM has indicated that at least a few of its EVS will be Buicks - and I would believe their styling will be more mainstream than this jumbled mess.

Nissan...please don't crush Tesla in the first year of the new Leaf production. Let many of the other EV car makers have some fun as well.
