Ford To Rebirth Mach 1 Nameplate As An Electric SUV
Teased in January 2018 and developed by Team Edison, the Mach 1 will be “a four-door Mustang SUV” of sorts according to Jim Farley, president of global markets. Just to be clear, the S550 and S650 Mustang won’t share their platforms with the Mach 1.

Developed from the get-go for complete electrification, the architecture of the newcomer is crucial to the Ford Motor Company’s all-in electric push. Arriving in 2020, the Mach 1 will be followed by five more EVs by 2022 as part of the Dearborn-based carmaker’s $11 billion investment in electric vehicle development.

Details on the Mach 1 and subsequent electric vehicles are slim, but based on the company’s committed attitude, the sins of the Focus Electric will be washed away with improved range, performance, and value. On top of that, Ford confirmed that over-the-air software updates are in the offing for its zero-emission vehicle range.

A fine venture but the Mach1 nameplate should be left out of it. This might have been done just for the PR / comments it will drive. If you have heritage and model lines with real history and are a touchstone in the lives of your customers, you have to them with respect.

A Mustang shooting brake would be a great idea. Now take that a bit more toward the practicality of a crossover and keep the Mustang styling DNA and you have something that could be quite wonderful.

Add a 4 door and shooting brake, the Mustang can support a whole line of vehicles.

Why not call this new line the Pinto? Lot of brand equity in that name, and time to share it with a whole new generation.

A cruel joke at best. This is the kind of marketing move if uncheck tarnishes a great brand name. Finding it too hard to be creative by establishing a new brand name Ford falls back and tries to leverage a great brand name that means something totally different in the eyes of enthusiasts. I would reassign the marketing people responsible for this and hire more creative people. Amp1, Flux1, etc anything but not Mach1.

I hear what you're saying, but if the product is one of those "gotta have it" vehicles, then they can get away with it, but the question is whether Ford has 64.5 Mustang magic in this product.
