Self-Driving Technology Faces Scrutiny After Pedestrian Death - Is This The First Of Many To Come?
The fatal accident involving an Uber Technologies Inc. self-driving vehicle is the most significant involving autonomous-driving technology since a Tesla Inc. driver's death touched off months of finger-pointing and set back the company's Autopilot program.

Tesla came under intense regulatory scrutiny after an Ohio man died using the company's Autopilot driver-assistance system in May 2016.

Mobileye, which supplied image-sensing equipment to the electric-car maker, cut ties in an ugly and public breakup. Tesla transitioned to new hardware in October of that year that disabled its cars' capability to automatically brake in emergencies for months. Autopilot also stopped allowing drivers to ignore repeated warnings to keep their hands on the wheel.

Yes. R&D is being conducted on the road in real life, real time. The programmers cannot anticipate all circumstances sitting at their computers and are gathering data on the street though putting real people at risk. Its the cost of progress.

Hitler said the same thing about the Jews. It's unconscionable to say that killing people is necessary for "progress".

Wasn't justifying it, just stating the obvious Society accepts a certain level of risk of death in the interest of progress. For example, casualties that society has found acceptable for progress to be made include pioneers, test pilots, innovative high risk surgical procedures, astronauts, etc. By no means am I saying that killing people is necessary for progress but at times it is a consequence of attempting to make progress.
