Uber Under Fire For Refusing Riders With Service Dogs

A Texas woman with cerebral palsy is suing Uber, claiming that drivers repeatedly denied her rides because she requires the use of a service dog. The lawsuit claims this occurred on "approximately 25 separate occasions" from 2016 to 2017. It's the latest of several lawsuits claiming that ride-hailing companies fail to accommodate people with disabilities.

The plaintiff, D'Edra Steele, claims multiple Uber drivers cancelled rides or refused her service only after finding out that she uses a service dog. Drivers used excuses such as allergies or lack of protective seat covers, according to the lawsuit. Such behavior violates Uber's own policies.

Eh I’m okay with it. I drove Uber for a couple of months earlier this year when I was bored. I didn’t let anything larger than a lap dog in my car. Refusing the ride does violate Uber’s policy and I get it, but Uber doesn’t make my car payments and I’m not a big fan of dogs stinking up my car. I didn’t let drunks get in my car at night either.

To say that a service dog is going to stink up your car just shows how little you know about service dogs. It also shows just how insensitive you are to people with disabilities.

Yeah Matt you’re right...the only thing I know about service dogs is that I don’t want them in my car. I am very sensitive with people and their disabilities but I also want to protect my personal property. I am not a pet lover. I choose not to have one in my home or my car.

That you're a hateful person is confirmed yet again.

A service dog is a whole other kettle of fish. But yes I have a big 87lb dog. He does stink. Moreso in the summer when he has been in the river. He does not go on the seats in the truck. He rides in the back XL airport crate and barks at cars too and from the park. Mind you for the odd time a service dog comes in the car I am sure a little bit of Fabreeze could set things right. Maybe keep a blanket in the trunk for these rare occasions too.
