Porsche Is Losing Sales To Tesla, But Doesn't Consider It A Benchmark To Follow

We’ve all heard time and time again that the upcoming Porsche Mission E will be a true Tesla Model S competitor. This makes sense since it will be a luxury electric sedan with room for more than a few passengers. Though it seems that Porsche is following Tesla’s lead in more than a few ways, CEO Oliver Bloom says the Mission E isn’t a Model S challenger.

This comment is a bit interesting since we previously reported that Porsche’s North American CEO has a very different view.

Porsche is also losing to Peterbilt, Preparation H, and Bible sales because it is not in those markets either.

Tesla isn't worth benchmarking because NONE of their technology is even remotely innovative.

Porsche will be innovative.

This is why Honda didn't benchmark the Pinto when developing the Civic. They were already ahead of the game.

@Mdarringer...each time you post it seems as if you have lost more brain cells. I am not a fan of Tesla but to say they have no innovative technology is completely false. They are at the forefront of EV battery technology. I know you can't understand the fact that there is a lot of complicated technology behind the battery and drive system for a Tesla...but that doesn't make it untrue. There are a lot of issues Tesla has from uncompetitive interiors to unreliable manufacturing but their core technology of the batteries and drive systems is well ahead of anyone else.

Oh Puhlease!

Tesla's technology is no more advanced than what Nissan has in the Leaf or GM in the Bolt. If you think otherwise your comically wrong.

It will all come down to how much pull the Tesla brand has after Model S and Model X competitors emerge from top luxury brands in 2020 or so. If they can hang onto their customer base and even grow it they will be fine. However, the convenience of a local branded dealer for service will strongly appeal to some first time BEV buyers. A person who bought a Model S over a Panamera or S-Class will likely continue to do so. The person who bought a Panamera over the Model S will likely get a Mission E. But predicting buying behaviour is best left to those with a crystal ball...

If the Germans can keep the prices in check, they will drive Tesla out of business pretty quickly. At minimum, Tesla will suffer a sales loss when people can buy a premium-priced vehicle that was engineered by companies that (1) know how to engineer cars and (2) who do prototype testing. The second wave--the mainstream manufacturers entering the market--will kill Tesla if the first wave doesn't. Tesla simply does not have the money or the capability to compete long term.

It's not just the pull, it's also the push. After the diesel fiasco and years of balking at electrification (still ongoing btw), Porsche has long hard road infront of them to convince people. It was absolutely hilarious when they introduced the Panamera SE hybrid and were comparing it to the Model S, badmouthing it, being lose with the truth, and we told them to just stop, no one will trade their Model S for one of those. They were taken quite aback.

Porsche does NOT have a "long, hard road infront (sic) of them." The Porsche badge sells anything.

Tesla's on the brink of bankruptcy. The Q1 loss is expected to be another $1 billion in the hole.

I doubt Porsche is worried in the slightest.

According to the 2017 sales results in the USA for large luxury sedans, everyone is losing to the Model S, and by quite a lot.

Model S 28,800
Merc S-Class 15,888
BMW 7 Series 9,276
Porsche Panamera 6,431
Gensis G90 4,398
Lexus LS 4,094
Audi A8 3,127

Except that's an apples to oranges comparison.

@MD It is and it also isn't. If you are a looking for a CEO / I've made it sedan (but still work for a living), these and a few others are your choices. I am quite sure the Model S took sales away from all the other brands, 29k people did not step up from a Buick or Honda Accord. Similar to how the Panamera came in and stole market share as it now outsells both the LS and the A8. Genisis too has exceeded them. I would guess that the traditional makers have a very big hate on for Tesla, Genesis and Porsche for stealing their clients.

If you look at the price ranges of those models presented by CANADIANCOMMENTS, it's not exactly apples to oranges.

Matt is also right in that Porsche has nothing to worry about, they have the resources (cash, technology, brand) to give Tesla a run for their money initially, and likely overtaking them eventually.

As much as Tesla is lauded for their vision and efforts in EV vehicles, they have maybe a year or so before they lose their current advantage. Elon should have a strategy for taking on giants like MB, Porsche, Toyota, etc. 2-5 years from now.

By that logic, a Chevy Bolt competes with a Mercedes C Class then.

Tesla will not be around in 2020. They have no unique technology, are burning through cash, and have exhausted their ability to raise capital. Their stock price is falling rapidly and their bond rating is being lowered.
I would not benchmark them either.
