Man Claims Automatic Closing Door On His X5 Removed His Thumb

For some people, buying a $70,000 BMW X5 can be a dream come true, unless that dream turns into a nightmare, spurred on by one of the car’s pricey options.

Godwin Boateng, a resident of Long Island, NY, ended up having to carry his severed thumb into the emergency room after his BMW X5’s SCAD sensor (Soft Closing Automatic Doors) activated the electric motor and shut the driver’s door on top of his thumb. After inspecting the finger, doctors concluded that it could not be reattached.

The function is called "soft close" for a reason, it is soft! Unless he purposed close the door with his finger inbetween to begin with...

Why this case is total rubbish, and the story is BS,

"Quoting the article "With the front driver’s door approximately one-foot ajar, the SCAD [Soft Closing Automatic Doors] sensor activated the electric motor, which pulled the driver’s door firmly"

A foot out are you kidding me, Just tried this on my BMW, the door is connect with the actuator for in to pull shut, which seem to be less than a third of an inch.

Total money grab.

Does anyone read articles anymore? The claim is that it did not soft close and that the sensors were knowingly (by BMW) defective. I'm not saying the claim is true, just saying what the article stated.

since you work for Benz and they use the same sensors and motors for soft close doors, you know as well as we do that this isn't possible. There's no way for the door to get pulled shut from a 1 foot open position, nor could the door physically latch and close with something as large as a thumb in the way.

It was only the tip of his thumb. He can still grow a finger nail. Not sure why all the media is running with "Removed his thumb". He still has a thumb
