Several States Consider Making It Legal For Cyclists To Roll Stop Signs

Ever see a bicyclist roll through a stop sign after slowing down at an intersection? Or ride through a red light after stopping and yielding? It's called the "Idaho stop," and until recently only one state allowed it: Idaho.

But that's changing. In October, Delaware became the second state to make it legal for cyclists to yield instead of stopping at stop signs on some roads. Some are calling it the "Delaware yield." And several other states are considering Idaho-stop-type legislation.

The practice is controversial, said Douglas Shinkle, transportation program director for the National Conference of State Legislatures (NCSL). "There's a perception among some people that this is giving special rights to bicyclists and legalizing an unsafe behavior."

Way to make one of the most annoying members of the road that much more annoying...get ready for more fights between cyclists and autonomous vehicles

Funny. Here in WA we've always called that a California stop, where a driver will glance at the stop sign and then keep rolling right on by. Not restricted to bicycles here. :)

I remember calling it that way back in the 60s.

And then the autonomous car with the cheeseburger-and-onion-rings slob behind the wheel can kill more cyclists.

If you are a real bike rider (and value your life) you always stop at stop signs. As reported in this thread, lots of drivers don't. Tap and go / or just slow down as you drive right through is seen very frequently where I live. Especially at night. Thankfully the police do a good job visiting my area to crack down on this behavior.

I HATE coming to 4-ways stops for that very reason. Not only to people not stop but they are extremely impatient at a 4-way. They KNOW it isn't their turn to go yet they do anyway.
