#NYIAS: Cadillac Tries To Steal The Genesis Thunder - Claims It Has A Stunning Halo Car On The Way

Cadillac doesn’t have the best track record when it comes to halo vehicles as both the ELR and XLR failed to catch on with consumers.

Cadillac President Johan de Nysschen is apparently undeterred as he used the 2018 Automotive Forum in New York to confirm the automaker is working on a new halo model which will “stun the world.” The executive asked people to be patient as he can’t talk specifics yet but the company has released a handful of high-profile concepts over the past few years including the Ciel, Elmiraj and Escala. The latter concept’s styling was recently applied to the 2019 CT6 V-Sport which will be unveiled at the New York Auto Show later this week.

Genesis thunder? LOL

What Cadillac needs is their Model S.

If it's a rebodied Corvette AGAIN it will be another failure.

@MD You will recall the Cien Concept was mid-engined... Caddy could be going for broke & swinging for the fences on this one. Unwise to say the least. Time will tell.

And that kind of swing for the fences would be a blunder.

I honestly think the days of the "halo" sports car is over as a "thing" assuming it was ever a valid strategy to begin with. The track record for halo sports cars is littered with failure. Neither NSX has done anything to elevate Acura. The LFA did nothing for Lexus. The GTR did nothing for Nissan. All four of these cars were/are simply too much more expensive than the next most expensive model wearing the brand name.

The reason that the Corvette works as a halo for Chevy is that it is very attainable. It's just a touch more than a Camaro for cost. The reason that the mid-engined Corvette won't likely be such is that it will be stupidly expensive for a Chevy.

While I would rather have a sports car than yet another crossover, Cadillac's halo also needs to be a mainstream hit and a niche sports car from a company known for making land yachts just isn't going to cut it.

Cadillac's "Model S" with a NAME and with gorgeous styling (I'm thinking Escala x2) would be exactly the right halo. EV. Trendy. Posh.

Moreover doing a mid-engined Corvette AND CXT8 (or whatever moronic name De Nysschen would dream up) would be suicidal for General Motors. The mid-engined Corvette is very likely a marketing step in the wrong direction to begin with and compounding that with a nonsensical Cadillac version would be dumb.

Even an EV version of the Corvette as a Cadillac would be the wrong way to go.

I am expecting that this HALO car is not going to be a car at all - I believe it will be a 3 seat Crossover - but based on the CT6 Omega Platform - and be ONLY a Cadillac Exclusive. THAT is the key - any car based on one already in the GM stable (Including the Corvette) will simply not be looked at as anything but Badge Engineering - no matter how good it is. So - a Corvette based Halo is probably NOT an option.

However - there is still another Niche that they could target - by producing a HUGE - well styled Sedan - to go after the Phantom/Mulsanne/Lagonda market. The problem with that is they would need more engine than even the new 4.2 would produce. And frankly - a V-12 would be needed in that realm

@TomM That would be a great idea. Not everyone wants an Escalade, but something
bigger than the XT5 that had style and is sleek and handles well due to its lightweight could be a winner for Cadillac. 3 Rows and there you go.

They need to build the El Miraj... they don't need a mid engine super car...

I think this is where everyone's argument has merit. Cadillac has taken all kinds of "routes" to increase brand awareness & sales in the past 15-20 years. So whatever "stunt" they dream up is very much possible.

A mild-re-bodied Corvette was a fun idea. But no, not a good one today. The exterior would have to be so different & not remotely reminiscent of the Chevy. A luxury mid-engine halo car is possible - but it's better left for Chevy to handle, especially to provide an answer to the newest Ford GT. The rear-engine Corvette will sell - get over it. But they won't plan to make many.

Now - hybrid or EV versions of the ATS/CTS/XT4/XT5 would strengthen the brands tech prowess. But a grand-touring sedan (not the CT6, Escala) with gas/hybrid/EV options - would definitely surprise the industry. The grand-touring sedan I'm thinking about is on the luxury scale of maybe Bentley Continental or RR Ghost. Or a performance-oriented EV sedan & a partnership with Tesla to use existing charging stations & to jointly build new charging stations off the existing infrastructure. Surprised?

Again, the headline is anti - Cadillac. I do not think when they are planning their marketing and product strategy they are thinking about what Genesis is doing at this show.
Agent009, I am guessing you drive a Camry.

So they go to an auto show and claim that next time they'll show something cool? And people here are lapping that up?

And then say that you'll have to wait until 2022. FIRE DE NYSSCHEN.
