EPA To Reject Obama's Landmark Fuel Efficiency Rules Stating They Are
The EPA is expected to use a Virginia car dealership on Tuesday as the setting to tout its rejection of the Obama administration's landmark vehicle fuel efficiency rules, a move that could put automakers in the middle of a battle between the Trump administration and California.

EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt plans to sign a declaration by Sunday that the Obama administration’s vehicle efficiency rules for 2022 through 2025 are "not appropriate" and must be revised, Reuters reported last week.

I won't matter. Product plans and major investments in new BEV and hybrid models are already in place and will continue to move forward. 2020 will still be a watershed year for luxury and mid-range BEV offerings from all the major players. A downward change in the average fleet fuel economy goal from 50mpg to 45mpg or 40 mpg for 2025 won't really change anything. The Genie is already out of the bottle so to speak.

It WILL matter. While economy will be going up no matter what, rolling back the requirement will have the effect of keeping vehicles that people truly want in production. MPG standards are just a social engineering exercise. f we wanted gas to be $1.00 a gallon, that is 100% possible.

Sorry - Matt - but CC is correct - it won't matter.
California is NOT going to go along with a reduction in MPH and an increase in emissions - and they have a group of states that is with them. Neither is Europe. And while we ALL agreed that the overall projections would have to change because the mix of vehicles is very different today from when the standards were set - I seriously doubt that the manufacturers are going to be willing to go back to Having several versions of a car - based on the state it is sold in.

However - SanJoseDriver is still whistling Dixie and making no sense. Sorry - but ICE vehicle will still be relevant 20 years from now - because the infrastructure to support EVs in areas where people do not have offstreet parking alone -has NOT been addressed. WE still do not have the electric generation capacity to replace even half of the cars sold with evs - and getting the required permits to build generation plants - as well as Solar And Wind fields - takes YEARS. Maybe there will be a few pockets of high EV use - in five to ten years - but not much more than that.

@TomM Of course you think @CC is correct. You Alt-Left, socialist-fascist communists share the same delusions so of course you'd agree with him.

Just remember that other countries (AKA the world outside the United States) have their own emissions laws and fuel economy standards. The freedom to pollute more in the US might not be received well by other countries, where US automakers hope to sell their products.

In much of the rest of the world, fossil fuels are a lot more expensive than in the US, so fuel economy is important there. Also, some countries have annual vehicle taxes based on carbon emissions to promote clearer vehicles and cleaner air. Good luck trying to sell to them if your products have low fuel economy and high emissions :-/

Also, recall that China, one of the world's worst polluters (desperately trying to change that) AND a massive car market, recently banned several hundred individual vehicle models from sale there because they did not meet China's new stricter standards. The list included models from BMW, Audi, and American automakers!

A vote for "dirty" (or dirtier) because it's easier, more convenient, and more profitable for US business, is a short-sighted and stupid idea.

Remember this conversation when foreign countries turn their nose up at American vehicles, and we wonder why, or the politicians start crying foul.

I don't think this will have any impact. If the traditional US manufactures decided to stay focused on ICE, they will be destroyed by international companies like VW and Nissan that are going all-in on EVs. California I'm sure will set their own rules which will force automakers to create two variants of cars or build for CA standards and sell that as well to the rest of the US. I don't think CA rules will make much of an impact either. It's do or die time for the traditional manufacturers--build EVs + AVs or become irrelevant in 5 years.

Oddly enough the current head of the EPA may actually get asked to step down/fired because of his spending habits and the fact he is living in the condo of a couple, one of which is a lobbyist for the energy industry. The truth is always stranger than fiction.

By the way, putting Scott Pruitt -- an outspoken EPA basher and anti-environment/pro-profit guy -- in charge of the EPA makes as much sense as putting a Flat Earther in charge of NASA, but then again, this is the norm for this administration.

Then tell me how the "Swamp" is being drained with unchecked spending in the form of a massive tax break for the rich and with cabinet members seem to like collecting frequent flyer miles riding in first class and coming back to the office to sit at a $31k dining set? While the 30% of voters can still dislike President Obama, he is still a 2 term president and still has the respect and admiration of the rest of the world. MAGA indeed...

@CC Your comment totally unrelated to the Kenyan Turd/tokenism. What the rest of the world thinks of the USA is irrelevant. Canada does not waste a nanosecond thinking about how they are perceived. If they did, Castro's love child would not be in office.

@CANADIANCOMMENTS: I’m embarrassed to say, we still have “Birthers”, Flat Earthers, Climate Change Deniers, Moon Hoaxers, etc., and other folks who are high on opinion, and low on facts. The education system has failed many millions.

Oh, and racism still runs high in “The Land of the Free,” as you can plainly see. The “loud and proud” variety; not the politically correct kind.

We see this reflected in skytop, MDarringer, qwertyfla1 (and few other’s) posts :-/ But then again, that’s not news.

@QEW your post pales in comparison to the ACTUAL facts. Failed President's don't get two terms. 30M people getting access to healthcare? A bullet in Osama Bin Laden? Saving the auto industry? Saving America from the self-imposed financial crisis? My oh my how memories fade. Maybe you can get a US Post Box / Dual Citizenship and vote for Trump in 2020. He will need all the votes he can get. By then his appeal will likely be reduced to NRA members only...

CC Nothing wrong with my memory. Hussien was elected only because he was black just like Wynne was elected because she was a lesbian -and look how that turned out for Ontario.

Brave hero Seals killed Bin Laden not Hussien. GM and Chrysler should have been left to go BK and people would have bought Fords or other brands and they would have picked up the slack rather than reward bad behavior.

The Wall Street bailout was criminal as none of those assholes did any time for the mass fraud they committed and lives ruined but of course many were BIG demo-rats donors. Trumps approval rating is rising as the American economy is kicking ass thanks to a pro-business administration. Sadly Trump may only be a one term POTUS as America is slipping into socialism but is much better off than Canada and Obama lite -Mohamed Trudeau.

@QEW. I actually agree with a lot of the FACTS in your post. As much I would have liked to have seen the big US banks fail, the weak automakers fail, and Wall Street leaders do serious time too, but it is hard to stand back (impossible) and see good hard working people lose their jobs and their life savings through no fault of their own when you are President.

CAFE is largely a failure and needs to be replaced. Breakthrough mpg gains are negated by enabling sales of large pickups and SUVs.

CAFE testing is also unduly complicated. I'd rather have steady-state readings at 35mph, 55mph and 70mph adjusted for the coefficient of drag. MPG testing should exist ONLY as a means of gathering information for consumers. It should never have been used as a means of social engineering.

Car companies are not going to reverse course. They have too much invested in EV and hybrids now. Further most are world companies selling to many different countries. So as much as the Trump administration thinks that changing the EPA fuel ratings by 2025 is giving the automakers a break it will only allow them 2 or 3 years reprieve(which they really do not want or need)from higher mileage vehicles. It may slow or may not slow the production and integration of EV's and EV infrastructure. However its not going to stop EV's and in 10 years there will probably be a dramatic shift away from fossil fuel vehicles. As with flat screen TV's the cost of the batteries(even if still predominantly Lithium Ion) will be dramatically lower and the charging times will be dramatically reduced. The V8 is and will continue to be a dying commodity as will the V6. Turbo fours with electric assist to limit turbo lag, regenerative braking, hybrid technology to remaining gasoline cars will be the norm. I also believe that a whole new industry converting older cars to electric ones will spring up fairly quickly by the mid 2020's. This is where the auto technology is going. The EPA getting rid of the Obama fuel regs is not going to stop this freight train.
